  • Shoot any film you like in your pocket camera: Slit 16 mm wide strips from 35mm film and you're no longer limited to the handful of ready-made 110 stocks; with the combo module you can make Minox strips too.
  • Safety lid protects your fingers: The pressure lid holds the film flat on the guide and keeps your fingers away from the exposed blades.
  • Manual pull-through: You pull the film through the blades by hand, with no crank and no gears.
  • Ready to use out of the box: The double-edge razor blades come fitted from the factory, and replacements are standard blades you can pick up anywhere.

Put to the test

Bob Janes tried out our film cutter with his Pentax Auto 110 for the British magazine 35mmc. He did his cutting in a changing bag and says himself that it’s easier in a dark room. Read the review on 35mmc (in English)

Compatibility

The slitting modules produce unperforated film. Many 110 cameras stop the film advance at the perforation hole or rely on it to unlock the shutter release, so it all depends on your camera:

  • Pentax Auto 110: works. You wind on as usual with two strokes of the lever. Because there's no hole to stop the advance, the gaps between frames get wider toward the end of the roll.
  • Pentax Auto 110 Super: works once you break out the lower breakaway tab on the cartridge. If you leave it in place, the shutter release stays locked whenever a cartridge is loaded.
  • Canon 110ED: works. If the shutter release locks with a cartridge loaded, break out the lower breakaway tab.
  • Fisher-Price 3815 (children's camera): worked in a customer's test.
  • Minox 110S: not confirmed by us, so test your camera first (see below).
  • Rollei A110 & E110: these advance the film as you slide the body closed and open again, and stop it at the perforation hole. Without a hole there's nothing to stop it, so for unperforated film we recommend the Pentax Auto 110.

Also for 16mm subminiature cameras: The unperforated strip also works in classic submini cameras whose film advance doesn't need perforations, loaded into that camera's own cassette (e.g. RADA):

  • Edixa 16 (all models, including the Wirgin Edixa 16)
  • Alka 16 & Franka 16 (RADA cassette)
  • Fotex MiniFex
  • GaMi 16 (Galileo)

Not suitable for unperforated film:

  • Voigtländer Vitoret 110 EL: the shutter won’t fire without perforations, even with the break-off tab snapped out.
  • Agfamatic 2000, 4008 Telepocket, 6000 and 6008: in a customer’s test, the shutter release locked up without perforations, even with the break-off tab snapped out. We haven’t checked other Agfamatic models, so test your camera first (see below).
  • Minolta Autopak 460 Tx, Minolta Weathermatic A and the Fisher-Price camera “Made by Kodak”: in the same test, the shutter release locked without perforations.
  • Kodak Cameo Motor 110: didn’t work without perforations in the same test.
  • Rollei 16: needs the perforations to advance the film.

How to test your camera:
Open the back (with no film inside), work the film advance and press the shutter release. If the release is blocked, your camera definitely needs perforation holes. If it fires, that’s a good sign, but not proof yet: some cameras with a push-pull (ratchet) film advance only lock up once a cartridge is sitting in the film compartment.

What's included

All versions ship with the razor blades already fitted, so you can start slitting right away. You'll also need empty 110 cartridges, for example our refillable cartridge, plus a changing bag or a dark room: slitting and loading are both done in the dark.

Description

Ready-made 110 film only comes in a handful of stocks these days. With the film cutter you slit your own 16 mm strips from 35 mm film, so you can shoot everyday 35 mm stocks in your pocket camera; with the combo module, Minox as well.

The system is modular and designed with safety in mind. You load the film, put the lid on (it gently holds the film in place) and pull the film through the blades by hand. The result is clean cut edges without any expensive specialist tools.

The cutter is part of our 110 pocket film system and our Minox 8x11 subminiature system: cutting film, loading cartridges, developing and scanning, all under one roof. Find out more in the 110 system overview and the 110 guide, as well as the Minox 8x11 overview and the Minox guide.
