Frequently asked questions before visiting a workshop
Is a repair worthwhile?
As a rule of thumb, if the repair costs more than half the camera’s current market value, it becomes economically questionable. Exceptions include cameras with personal or collector’s value.
More details below in the “Background” section.
How much does a CLA cost?
Mechanical SLRs (e.g. Pentax K1000) typically cost 80–150 EUR. Leica M shutter repairs cost 200–400 EUR. Lens overhauls cost 100–300 EUR. Prices vary greatly depending on the workshop and the work involved—request a written quote before sending it in.
What can I fix myself?
Three common problems can often be solved yourself:
- Dead light meter: usually just the old PX625/PX27 mercury battery. Special adapters solve the problem permanently.
- Sticking shutter: on compact cameras (e.g. Minox 35), carefully cleaning the shutter magnet with isopropyl alcohol often helps.
- Cloudy viewfinder / mirror: Fungus on the mirror or focusing screen can often be visibly improved with a soft brush and distilled water.
Background: when a repair is worthwhile
Analog camera repair: is it worth it?
The honest answer: it depends. Before sending in your camera, answer three questions: What is the repair worth? What can you fix yourself? When is a workshop necessary?
How much does a camera repair cost?
The price range is enormous. A CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust) for a mechanical SLR such as the Pentax K1000 typically costs between 80 and 150 EUR. Shutter repairs on a Leica M can quickly cost 200 to 400 EUR. A lens overhaul can cost between 100 and 300 EUR, depending on the manufacturer and complexity.
As a rule of thumb, if the repair costs more than half the camera’s current market value, it becomes economically questionable. Exceptions include cameras with personal or collector’s value.
Which faults can you fix yourself?
Not every fault requires a workshop. Three of the most common problems can be fixed with minimal tools:
- Battery problem: the most common cause of a “dead” light meter. Many cameras from the 1960s and 1970s require the now-banned PX625 or PX27 mercury battery. Special battery adapters solve the problem permanently for just a few euros.
- Sticking shutter: on some cameras (e.g., Minox 35), carefully cleaning the shutter magnet with isopropanol is sufficient.
- Cloudy viewfinder / mirror: Fungus on the mirror or focusing screen can often be visibly improved with a soft brush and distilled water.
What should go to the repair shop?
Keep away from: lens aperture repairs (oil-contaminated aperture blades), shutter curtain replacement (Leica, Canon), electronic defects in automatic cameras, and anything involving adjustment of the film transport or mirror mechanism. The workshops listed above have the tools, spare parts, and experience required for this work.
Note about community comments
Comments about prices and services come from the community and are subjective. They are intended as an initial guide. Anyone seriously interested in a service should contact the workshop directly.
Adapters, batteries, and spare parts instead of repairs
Many “broken” cameras don’t need a trip to the repair shop — they just need the right adapter for mercury cells (PX625, PX27), a new battery door, or special accessories. We design and manufacture exactly these parts.
