Do you run one of these shops?

Are the address or product range no longer correct, is your shop missing from the list, or would you like to appear with your logo and verified badge? Just write to us at info@ausgeknipst.de. We will update your listing free of charge; the listing itself costs nothing and remains free.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I still get analog film?

Drugstores usually carry just one color film at a steep price. If you want a choice (black-and-white, slide, cine film, roll film, sheet film), buy from a specialist retailer: either at a local shop or from a specialist mail-order retailer. Both are included in this list; use the “Range: Film” filter to see only the addresses that carry film.

A practical tip: Film is a refrigerated product. Shops with high turnover have fresher stock, and when ordering from a mail-order retailer, it’s worth placing a combined order because shipping per roll then hardly adds up.

Used camera: buy from a dealer or privately?

Privately (classified ads, flea market, auction) is cheaper, but you buy as is: no right of return, no warranty, and you often won’t find out whether the shutter works at all speeds until after you develop your first roll of film.

At a dealer, you pay a markup and get inspected equipment, a warranty, and usually a right of return. Many of the shops here service their cameras before selling them and provide a guarantee. If you can’t assess the equipment yourself, the extra cost is almost always worth it.

Our guide Buying an analogue camera on eBay explains in detail how to avoid getting burned when buying from a private seller.

What does “retail partner” mean?

Retail partners stock our products, typically our battery adapters, which allow old cameras to expose correctly again despite the mercury batteries that have long been banned, or replacement parts such as battery compartment covers and light seal kits.

This is not a rating or a paid placement: shops without the badge are not worse; they simply do not (yet) stock our products. It is still practical: if you are going there anyway, you can take the adapter with you directly, without shipping or waiting.

Do you run a shop and want to stock our parts? Get in touch with us at info@ausgeknipst.de.

How do the star ratings work?

You can give each listing 1–5 stars. The average and number of votes are displayed; you can sort the list by them using “Highest rated”. Each shop counts one rating per person. You can change it at any time (click a new star) or remove it (click the same star again).

Why do I need to log in for this? Ratings are only honest if nobody can manipulate them. Without registration, bots or individuals could push a shop up or down with hundreds of fake votes. That is why every rating is linked to a real customer account in our shop: log in or register for free, leave a rating, and you're done. We only see your account ID; nothing personal appears on the map.

What does the ✓ verified checkmark mean?

The green checkmark means that the shop has reviewed and confirmed its listing itself. The address and product range have been approved by the shop. It is not a quality seal and says nothing about how good the shop is. That is what the star ratings are for.

We researched shops without a checkmark ourselves; as far as we know, their details are accurate, but they have not yet been independently verified. Do you run a shop and want the checkmark? Send a short email to info@ausgeknipst.de.

What does “chain” mean?

A chain with many locations (such as Foto Erhardt or Hartlauer). They reliably stock analogue supplies and often have the shortest journey, but the range is standardized, and the depth of advice varies greatly from one branch to another.

Independent specialist retailers usually have the more unusual films, tested used equipment, and staff who shoot film themselves. Since that is what most people are looking for, “No chains” is the default view. You can bring them all back via the store type filter.

How does the radius search work?

Simply enter your postcode in the search bar. The list will then show shops within the selected radius, sorted by distance, and the map will zoom in on your area. The distance is measured as the crow flies; the position is the address or the centre of the town/postcode area. On the map, green dots are verified listings.

Austria and Switzerland: Postcodes there have four digits. Simply enter the four digits. However, around a thousand of these numbers exist in both countries (for example, 1010 is in Vienna and Lausanne). In that case, we will ask you to specify: enter A-1010 for Austria or CH-1010 for Switzerland.

Privacy: Your postcode is matched locally in your browser against a postcode table and is not sent anywhere.

Pure mail-order retailers do not have a shop you can visit. Instead, they deliver everywhere. If there is nothing nearby, set the radius to “all” and filter by “Shipping only”.

Why is my favourite shop missing?

Probably because we did not find it. The list was researched independently and is certainly not complete. Write the shop in the comments below, then we will check it and add it.

Deliberately not included in the list: drugstores and electronics retailers with a leftover film shelf, pure marketplaces and sellers without their own shop, photo labs that only offer processing and no sales (they are listed on our film lab page), and repair businesses that only provide repairs (they are listed in the workshop overview).

Buying analogue: the overview

Where can I buy analogue film and accessories?

The trade in analogue materials has largely moved online. But it has not disappeared. The list above brings together 122 shops and specialist mail-order retailers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, searchable by name, city or postcode (radius search with map) and filterable by country and product range. Anyone looking for choice (black-and-white, slide, cinema film, roll film, sheet film) cannot avoid specialist dealers; at best, a drugstore carries a single colour film.

Buy used analogue cameras

There are only a few new analogue cameras left. The market is therefore a second-hand market, and it is divided into two worlds. Buying privately is cheaper, but comes without inspection, warranty or returns. At a specialist dealer, you pay a premium and get refurbished equipment in return, often with a warranty. Many of the shops listed here inspect and clean every camera before selling it; some offer up to a one-year warranty.

What you should look out for when buying, both in-store and from a mail-order retailer, is explained in the guide Buying a Used Analogue Camera. Which film is right for you and what the numbers on the package mean is explained in Buying Analogue Film. The guide Buying an Analogue Camera on eBay explains how to avoid the usual pitfalls even when buying privately. And if the camera you bought does jam: Does Every Broken Analogue Camera Need a CLA?

Analogue shops in Austria and Switzerland

In Austria, the analogue specialist trade is concentrated in Vienna, with additional addresses in Graz, Salzburg, and Linz. In Switzerland, the shops are spread across Zurich, Bern, Basel, St. Gallen, and Lucerne. Use the »Country« filter to show only one country. Orders across the Swiss border incur customs duties and import tax. It is best to clarify this with the retailer beforehand.

What else belongs in the bag?

Besides film and the camera, it's usually small things that make an old camera usable again: a suitable battery (many cameras from the 1960s and 1970s require cells that are no longer available), intact light seals, and occasionally a replacement part that has not been produced for decades. That's exactly where most attic finds fail—not because of the optics.

Bought a camera, and now it doesn't work?

The most common reason is not a defect, but the battery: many cameras from the 1960s and 1970s were designed for mercury cells, which have not been available for decades (PX625, PX27, PX13). We design and manufacture the right adapters, as well as replacement battery compartment covers, light seal kits, and accessories for cameras for which nothing else is available.
