The Minox 8x11 format is one of the most fascinating chapters in photographic history: a spy camera that fits in the palm of your hand and produces surprisingly good images. But getting started with subminiature photography can be confusing: Which camera? Which film? How do you develop it? How do you digitize it?

1. Which Minox is best for getting started?

Minox cameras are tiny, precise, and surprisingly capable—but which model is right for you? The relevant models at a glance, with a specific buying recommendation.

The Minox family at a glance

All 8x11 Minox cameras share the same basic principle: a sliding metal body, a fixed 15mm lens, zone focusing, and a film transport system that operates automatically when the camera is opened and closed.

Our recommendation: Minox B or Minox A

For getting started, we recommend the Minox B, for one simple reason: It doesn't need a battery. The selenium light meter works purely mechanically and still provides usable readings after 60+ years (provided the selenium cell is still intact). What's more, the B is by far the most common model on the used market, and spare parts and CLA services (Clean-Lube-Adjust) are available.

The Minox A (or IIIs) is the alternative for purists: Completely mechanical, no light meter, no battery, nothing that can break. Exposure is estimated using the Sunny 16 rule or measured with a smartphone app.

Budget tip: Minox EC: The cheapest option, fully automatic and foolproof. Drawback: no manual control and dependent on a battery (PX27 required).

What to look for when buying used

  1. Test the sliding mechanism: The camera must open and close smoothly, without resistance or scraping
  2. Check the focus wheel: It must turn smoothly from 20 cm to infinity
  3. Listen to the shutter: Cycle through all speeds and listen for a consistent sound
  4. Light meter (on B/BL/C): Test it under different lighting conditions and compare it with a smartphone app
  5. Film transport: Opening and closing the camera should advance the film counter
  6. CLA service: A serviced camera is worth its weight in gold. Budget: ~€80–120 from a specialist

Where to buy: eBay (classifieds and international), Photrio.com forum, Minox clubs, local flea markets.

Non-Minox 8x11 cameras

  • Yashica Atoron (1970s, also sold in Germany through Quelle Versand as the Revue mini-star): 15mm f/2.8, CdS meter, automatic exposure. Cheaper than a Minox (€90–180), a solid entry into the 8x11 world, but not as well made as the original Minox models.
  • VEF Riga: The historical predecessor of the Minox (Latvian production before World War II). A collector’s item with focusing from 20 cm and no light meter. Due to its high collector’s value, we recommend no longer actively taking photographs with the VEF Riga. Our film cassettes do not fit the VEF Riga; the cassette dimensions differ slightly.

2. Buy preloaded film or load it yourself?

Original Minox film is no longer produced, but that’s not a problem. Today, you have two ways to get film: buy it preloaded or load it yourself. The DIY route is not only cheaper, but also gives you the freedom to choose from the entire 35mm film range.

Option 1: Buy preloaded Minox film

There are still a few sources for preloaded 8x11 film:

  • Blue Moon Camera (USA): Specialist in subminiature film, ~$26/roll
  • Fotoimpex (Germany): Occasionally stocks Minox film
  • NOS (New Old Stock): Original Minopan, Minocolor, or Minox SPY film on eBay. Caution: expiration dates are often more than 20 years past

For getting started, preloaded film is ideal: you can get to know the camera without also having to worry about loading film. But it gets expensive over time.

Option 2: Load the film yourself

The calculation is simple: The Basic Slitter cuts a 35mm film cartridge lengthwise into two 9.2mm strips over the full length of the film. This produces four complete 36-exposure Minox films plus two shorter films with 15–18 exposures. Cost: ~€1–3 per Minox film instead of €26 for original stock.

You need:

  1. A film slitter, e.g. our Ausgeknipst film slitter or the Camerhack Slitter
  2. A refillable cassette, e.g. our Ausgeknipst film cassette

Which film works in the 8x11 format?

Basically, any 35mm or 120 film works; it only needs to be cut to 9.2mm width. Here are our recommendations by intended use:

What ISO the small format requires

With the 8x11 format, the resolution of the negative is the limiting factor, not the camera. The tiny negative (8×11mm = 88 mm²) must be enlarged considerably, and every film grain structure becomes a problem in the process.

Rule of thumb: ISO 50–100 deliver the best results. ISO 400 is the practical compromise. Above that, grain becomes dominant and eats into detail.

In practice: 3–8 MP effective resolution, depending on the film, focus, and camera shake. Enough for social media, websites, and smaller prints (up to approximately A5).

High-sensitivity films and light leaks: Films with ISO 800 and higher (especially Ilford Delta 3200) are extremely sensitive to light, and the small cassette format offers less light protection than a 35mm cartridge. Our recommendation: Stick with ISO 400 and push during development.


3. Cassettes and tools for self-loading

Loading film yourself sounds more complicated than it is. With the right tools, the process takes less than 10 minutes, and you save ~85% compared with ready-made Minox film.

What you need

  1. A film cutter for cutting 35mm film to a width of 9.2mm
  2. A refillable cassette that holds the film and fits into the camera
  3. Adhesive tape for securing the film leader to the Take-Up Spool
  4. A storage container for the loaded cassette

The film cutter

  • Daylight operation; the film is protected inside the cutter
  • Safety lid prevents accidental opening

Camerhack Daylight Slitter (~$35): Simpler design, works well. Splits the 35mm roll lengthwise into two 9.2mm strips, which together are enough for four 36-exposure Minox films plus two shorter films.

The film cassette

  • Compatible with: Minox A, B, BL, C, EC, LX, TLX, CLX, MX, Sharan, Yashica Atoron
  • LX cameras: Automatic counter reset when inserted

Use 36-exposure cassettes only. The 15-exposure cassettes have a different spool diameter and do not fit all camera models.

Loading film: Step by step

Preparation (in daylight):

  1. Cut the film: Insert 35mm film into the cutter and cut it to 9.2mm
  2. Prepare the adhesive tape: Cut a piece (9 mm high × approx. 45 mm long)
  3. Have the cassette ready: Open only the Feeding Chamber

Loading (in COMPLETE darkness!):

  1. Secure the film leader: Fix the strip of film to the Take-Up Spool with the adhesive tape
  2. Load the film: Wind it up carefully and evenly, with the emulsion facing inward
  3. Close the cassette: Attach the Feeding Chamber and snap it into place
  4. Put it straight in the canister: Place the loaded cassette directly in the storage canister

Practical tips (source: moments-of-now.com):

  • A changing bag (dark bag) is cheaper than an entire darkroom
  • Practice with an old film the first time, in the light, to understand the mechanism
  • The take-up spool should turn freely; if it catches, rewind the film and roll it up again

Practical test: Community feedback

Independent test by Thomas Siepmann (moments-of-now.com): Thomas tested our cassette in a Minox A with ISO 200 film and had it developed at a professional lab:

  1. Light tightness: Sufficiently light-tight when handled correctly. Even with intentional exposure in extreme midday sun (EV 15), there is only minimal light leakage at the end of the film; normal cassette changes in the shade cause no problems.
  2. Film transport: Even spacing between the negatives, with no increased resistance.
  3. Scratches: No scratches visible on the developed film.

4. What to look out for when shooting?

8x11 photography has its own rules. The negative is tiny, so every error in exposure, focus, or camera shake is ruthlessly magnified. A few things that make the difference.

Setting the exposure correctly

Cameras with a light meter (B, BL, C, EC, LX): The built-in meters are surprisingly usable on most models. If you're unsure, compare with a smartphone app (e.g., LightMeter or PhotoMate).

Cameras without a light meter (Minox A): The Sunny 16 rule is your best friend: Sun: f/16, 1/ISO value. Overcast: f/8. Shade: f/5.6.

Practicing zone focusing

All Minox cameras use zone focusing. The trick: Use the hyperfocal distance. At f/3.5 and a 15mm focal length, the depth of field is surprisingly large. Set the focus to ~2 meters; everything from ~1m to infinity will be sharp. For street photography, simply set it to 2 meters and forget it.

Camera shake is the biggest problem with 8x11

Camera shake is significantly more critical with the 8x11 format than with 35mm because the negative has to be enlarged more.

  • At least 1/125s for sharp handheld shots
  • Hold the camera steady: Brace your arms or lean against a wall
  • Press the shutter gently, don't jerk it

Composition for 8x11

  • Simple subjects work best: one clear subject, with little distraction
  • High contrast helps; scenes with strong contrast look better than flat ones
  • Get close: Minox images benefit from being close, not from wide-angle panoramas

Practical checklist

  • Bring a spare cassette (loaded and in the container)
  • Change cassettes only in subdued light
  • Check the camera before taking the shot: Has the film counter advanced?
  • In cold weather: Warm up the camera slowly (condensation possible)

5. Have it developed or develop it yourself?

Your Minox film has been exposed; now it needs to be developed. This is the step that makes many beginners unsure, because 8x11 does not fit into the standard workflow of most photo labs. There are three ways.

Option 1: Have it developed at a photo lab

The biggest problem: Most labs cannot process 8x11. But there is a clever trick:

The C-41 trick: Transfer Minox film into a 35mm cartridge: In complete darkness, remove the Minox film from the cassette and spool it into an empty 35mm film cartridge. Take it to a regular lab; the machine will develop the film normally. Mark clearly: “Do not cut film!” Cost: ~€5 per film, approximately 1-hour turnaround. Works only for C-41 (colour negative). Option 2: Develop at home

Developing film yourself gives you full control over the process and is significantly cheaper in the long run than using a lab. Jobo and Paterson standard reels are made for 35mm, 8x11 won't fit. That's why we developed dedicated reels:

How black-and-white development works
  1. Loading the film onto the reel (in the dark/changing bag): Insert the film strip into the 8x11 reel
  2. Developer, e.g. Rodinal 1+50, 10–12 min at 20°C
  3. Stop bath: 30 seconds
  4. Fixer: 5 minutes
  5. Washing: 10–15 minutes under running water
  6. Wetting agent: A few drops of Agepon or dish soap to prevent water spots
  7. Drying: Hang the film in a dust-free environment
C-41 color development at home

A C-41 kit (e.g. CineStill Cs41, Tetenal Colortec) also makes color development possible. Temperature is critical: 38°C ± 0.5°C. One kit is enough for ~16–24 rolls of film.


6. Methods for digitizing compared

You've developed the film; now you need to turn the tiny negatives into digital images. Not every method that works for 35mm is also suitable for 8x11. The format places special demands on resolution.

Why 8x11 presents special challenges

The Minox negative is 88 mm² in size, about 1/10 the area of a 35mm negative. To enlarge a Minox negative to A4, you need magnification of ~27×. With 35mm, it is only ~8×. Every pixel counts.

Why the flatbed scanner isn't enough

Most flatbed scanners have an optical resolution of ~3200 dpi. For an 8×11mm negative, this produces an image of only about 1000×1400 pixels, less than 1.5 megapixels. Not recommended.

DSLR or mirrorless camera on the copy stand

Camera Scanning is clearly the superior method for 8x11:

  • Resolution: A 24MP APS-C sensor with a 1:1 macro lens delivers ~12000 ppi on the negative
  • Speed: 10 seconds per frame
  • Color accuracy: Raw light + RAW data = maximum control
  • Flexibility: The same equipment scans 35mm, 120, and 4x5

Software for post-processing

  • Negative Lab Pro: Lightroom plugin, premium standard (~$99)
  • darktable negadoctor: Open source, free
  • FilmLab: Standalone app, also for smartphones
  • Topaz DeNoise AI: AI noise reduction for high-ISO scans

APS-C with 20+ MP is more than sufficient. Full frame is a bonus, but not a must.

The workflow: From negative to finished image

  1. Assemble the setup: Copy Stand → CS-LITE → Adapter → Scanner → Hood
  2. Mount the camera: On the 3/8" mount, align vertically
  3. Live View + Focus Peaking: Focus on the film grain
  4. Insert frame: Slide the film into the scanner, place the Top Plate on top
  5. Capture + advance: Photograph the frame (2s timer), advance the film, position the next section
  6. Post-Processing: Import → Negative Conversion → Crop → Denoise → Export

Moin! Richtig viel und gute Information. Ich habe 2 Fragen: Wenn ich einen 36 Bilder 35 mm schneide – wie viel Länge bekomme ich in die Minox Kasette bzw. brauche ich für 36 Bilder ? In eurem Video zeigt ihr einen kleinen ”Dorn ” mit dem ihr den geschnitten Film stramm wickelt um ihn in den Halter zu bekommen. Habt ihr den selber gedruckt? Gibt es das STL irgendwo? Christian
