Why switching to a digital camera is worthwhile

Why the digital camera beats the flatbed scanner

Flatbed scanners were the standard for years. An Epson V600 or V850 is part of the basic equipment for many Analog photographers. But the technology has limitations, and most of them are dictated by physics.

Resolution: A flatbed scanner claims 6,400 DPI, but in reality often delivers a maximum of 2,400 DPI. A A 36 MP camera with a macro lens achieves the equivalent of over 4,000 DPI, and is visibly sharper because the the light only has to pass through the film once.

Speed: One 35mm roll (36 frames) takes 30 to 60 minutes on the flatbed with preview and fine-tuning. With a camera: under 5 minutes when the workflow is right.

What to look for in a film scanner setup

These five points come up most often in the community. Keeping them in mind when buying saves frustration in everyday life.

  • Film Flatness: The negative must lie perfectly flat; with macro lenses and less than 1mm The depth of field is shallow enough that even a minimal bend causes blur. Look for S-curve guidance and format-specific channels.

  • Stray Light: Light entering the lens around the negative destroys contrast. Good Systems address this from both sides: mask frame (bottom) and lens hood (top). Be careful when the stray-light shield is sold as a separate accessory is sold.

What film formats are available?

Film is not just film. Different cameras use different film formats, and each format needs a the right film holder with the correct exposure window.

35mm film

By far the most common format. Standard cameras such as Canon AE-1, Nikon F3, Pentax K1000, or the modern Leica M6 all use 35mm film. The standard format is 24×36mm, but there are variants:

  • Standard (24×36mm): The classic 35mm format
  • Half Frame (18×24mm): Cameras such as Olympus Pen, Canon Demi. Two images per frame.
  • Panoramic / X-Pan (24×82mm): Hasselblad X-Pan, Horizon. Wide panoramic format.
  • Sprocket (Full Width): Includes the perforated area. Lomography look.

120 medium format

Roll film for medium-format cameras such as Hasselblad 500C/M, Mamiya RB67, Pentax 67, or Rolleiflex. They all use the same 60mm-wide film, but with different exposure windows:

  • 6×4.5 (56×42mm): Bronica ETRSi, Mamiya 645
  • 6×6 (56×56mm): Hasselblad, Rolleiflex. Square format.
  • 6×7 (56×70mm): Mamiya RB67, Pentax 67
  • 6×9 (56×84mm): Fuji GW690, Linhof Technika

Why the window is narrower than the film: 120 roll film is 61.5 mm wide, while the exposure windows end at 56 mm. The difference is not waste, but the zone where a holder can grip the strip at all. A window spanning the full width, including the film edges and edge markings in the scan, removes precisely this guidance: the film then sags in the middle, where the image is located. We are not aware of a sprocket equivalent like the one used with 35mm for medium format in any system; if you know of one, please let us know. Anyone who needs the edges can sandwich the negative between two sheets of anti-Newton glass and work frame by frame.

Special formats

Two formats supported by almost no system on the market:

  • 110 Pocket Film (16mm channel): Small cassette cameras from the 1970s/80s
  • Minox 8×11 (9.2mm channel): Subminiature film. Spy camera format. Dedicated film holders for it are practically nonexistent.

What makes the system special

  • Dual S-Curve + Precision Guide Channel: Film flatness is the top priority. Every film channel side, tailored to the width of the film format.

Quick Start: How to scan your first film

The end goal: An efficient, completely tidy Scanning workstation.

The following steps apply to a Pro or Full Set. For a Basic Set, the light source and adapter are omitted; you uses your own setup.

  1. Position the light source: Place the CineStill CS-LITE on the copy stand or flat on the table. Plug in USB-C and switch it on.
  2. Place the Adapter Plate (only for Minox, 110, 35mm): Place the mask frame on the light source. Not necessary for 120, Direct Fit.
  3. Place the Base Plate: Place the Base Plate with the rubber feet facing down onto the adapter (or directly place on the light source).
  4. Place the Top Plate: Place the magnetic Top Plate on the Base Plate; it snaps into place through the Insert the magnets into position.
  5. Insert the film from the side: Slide the film strip from the side into the S-curve channel. The the guide takes it in, the film automatically lies flat, and the Top Plate stays in place. Only short snippets from the For roll ends that cannot be fed through, insert them from above with the Top Plate lifted.
  6. Insert the lens hood: Slide the hood into the rails of the Top Plate. Extension tubes attach if needed.
  7. Align the camera: Mount the camera on a tripod or copy stand. Macro lens, Live View, manual Focus. Align parallel to the film plane. You can check this with a small mirror: place it where where the film would otherwise lie, and move the camera until the reflection of the front lens is exactly centered in the image; the optical axis is then perpendicular to the film plane. We use the same method for our Flatness measurements.
  8. Scan: Photograph the frame. For the next frame, advance the strip by one frame and pull it out on the other side; the Top Plate stays in place, and you don't touch it between frames.

A complete 35mm roll (36 frames) can be digitized in under 5 minutes. A 120 roll (12–16 frames) in under 2 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a specific camera?
No. Any digital camera with a macro lens will work. APS-C or full-frame with 24 megapixels or more is recommended. Mirrorless cameras are ideal because of their electronic shutter and Live View, but DSLRs work too. work.

Which macro lens do you recommend?
Any macro lens with a 1:1 reproduction ratio. Proven options: Nikkor Z MC 50mm, Canon RF 100mm Macro, Laowa 100mm 2x Macro, Sony FE 90mm Macro. From 50mm focal length and a 1:1 reproduction ratio, you're well equipped.

Does this work with my light source?
Yes. Our system isn't tied to a specific light source. It works with any flat illuminated surface, that is at least as large as the Base Plate. CineStill CS-LITE, Negative Supply Light Source, Kaiser Slimlite, Raleno, Jack Scanlight—all compatible.

Can I scan different formats with one set?
Yes and no. Within a format family (e.g. 35mm Standard, Half Frame, Pano), you only switch the Top Plate; the Base Plate stays the same. Between format families (e.g. 35mm and 120), you need a different Base Plate. The light source, adapter, and Copy Stand are shared.

Why isn't there a Base Plate that covers all formats?
That was our first idea, and we built and measured it. A Base Plate that is supposed to support every format has to be based on the largest format, 6x9 in our case, meaning an opening of around 56×84 mm. A 35mm strip is 35 mm wide and rests neither on the sides nor at the edges: nothing guides it anymore, and it sags. With 110 pocket film and Minox 8×11, this becomes even more noticeable. Since film flatness is our top priority, remained partially modular: switch the Top Plate within a format family, and the Base Plate switch them as well. That's one more component on the shelf, but in return, you get a film that truly lies flat.

What's the difference between Basic, Pro, and Full?
Basic = film holder only (Base + Top). Pro = film holder + CineStill CS-LITE + Adapter + Geli + Extension Tubes. Full = Pro + Copy Stand MK2. If you already have a light source and a tripod, Basic is sufficient. If you're starting from scratch, if you're just starting out, Full is the complete package.

Will my film be damaged during scanning?
No. The film channel has a smooth, scratch-free surface. The rubber feet (Shore 70A) prevent contact between film and hard edges. The magnetic system never comes into direct contact with the film; the film is inserted into the channel and the Top Plate sits down without applying force.
