On these Canon cameras, the remote release socket sits exposed on the body. Without a cap, dust and moisture settle on the contacts, which can lead to malfunctions at the remote port. This cover cap seals the port and keeps it clean as long as no remote release is connected.
On many older bodies, the original part went missing long ago. The cap is a direct replacement and can be removed at any time when you connect a release.
