The integrated light meters of the classic Rolleiflex models are based on selenium cells. These components have a limited lifespan, which is shortened by constant exposure to light. The cover simply snaps on and shields the cell when the camera is not in use — during storage or transport, the light meter remains functional for as long as possible.
