Without a battery, every shutter speed including B works, but the light meter needs the battery. [1]

After changing lenses, turn the aperture ring first to the smallest aperture and then to the widest, so the meter couples correctly. [1]

The film advance lever turns the meter on; pushed fully back against the body, it turns it off. [1]
