Rolleiflex 2.8 vs 3.5: Planar vs Xenotar Buying Guide

Buying a Rolleiflex in 2026 is primarily a matter of condition, not model: optically, there is very little separating the sought-after 2.8F from the more affordable 3.5F; Planar and Xenotar are practically equivalent, and the selenium light meter is dead in most examples anyway. If you don’t need the crank, the Rolleicord Vb gives you the same Rollei precision for a third of the price. This guide explains the model family, the three bayonet sizes, and what you really need to look for when buying used.

The model family and how to identify it by looking at the camera

Franke & Heidecke built the twin-lens Rolleiflex from 1929 through the 1980s (and as the GX/FX through 2015). For buying used, the postwar models matter most. Roughly sorted:

You can identify the classes faster by looking at the camera than at the nameplate: Crank with automatic first-frame detection = genuine Rolleiflex Automat line. Knob = Rolleicord. Crank without first-frame automation (start mark like on the Cord) = Rolleiflex T or GX/FX. A honeycomb window above the viewing lens reveals the selenium meter; “White Face” models (bare aluminum front, from around 1970/71 onward) are late-series models with a collector premium.

Let’s clear up one confusion right away: The 1956–59 model is called “3.5C” in German sources (Prochnow) and “3.5E” in English sources (Parker/Evans), the same camera, two numbering systems. Keep this in mind when comparing eBay listings.

The big question: 2.8 or 3.5?

The 2.8F is the poster model; the 3.5F costs several hundred euros less. What do you get for the premium? Two-thirds of a stop more light, a slightly brighter viewfinder image, shallower depth of field for subject isolation, and around 200 g more weight on an already front-heavy camera.

What you do not get is greater sharpness. The community tends to believe the opposite: the late six-element 3.5 Planar is repeatedly described as the sharpest lens in the entire series. On photo.net, one collector sums up the hierarchy like this: 2.8 Planar most sought-after, 2.8 Xenotar just as good but cheaper, “F3.5 Zeiss Planar: sharpest of all, but cheaper due to speed". And a Photrio user who owns both F models writes dryly: “Why f/3.5? Because the 2.8F in comparable condition is stupidly more expensive … I do not believe I have taken a single photo at the wide open aperture."

The best advice from 20 years of forum discussions: “Don't sweat the small stuff … A healthy sample is everything." Buy based on condition, not aperture. A freshly serviced 3.5F beats a neglected 2.8F in every respect except showing off.

Planar vs. Xenotar: much ado about nothing

From 1952 (2.8) and 1956 (3.5), buyers could choose between the Carl Zeiss Planar and Schneider-Kreuznach Xenotar, two parallel designs for the same purpose, both with five elements (the later 3.5 models had six). The Xenotar was about five percent cheaper from the factory. Sixty years later, the market still charges a premium for the Zeiss name, despite there being no optical benefit to justify it.

Anyone who has owned both says things like this (Photrio): “I've owned both Xenotar and Planar and confirm there is no perceptible difference on the image … I got a better price for the Planar examples, probably because Zeiss has better marketing?" The consensus across all the forums: sharpness is a tie, while the Xenotar tends to handle flare just a touch better. The deciding factor is something else: the condition of the glass and a manufacturing quirk: Rollei did not assign lens types to serial-number batches in a uniform way. What is installed is indicated on the lens ring, not in the camera body's serial number.

E vs. F: What the extra cost really buys you

Optically, the E and F are identical. The difference lies in the exposure meter and viewfinder: on the E model, the selenium meter is uncoupled (read the value and transfer the settings manually) or missing altogether; on the F, it is coupled to shutter speed and aperture via a differential gear, providing match-needle metering like a modern camera. The F models also have the brighter focusing screen and removable viewing hood for focusing-screen upgrades (the E2/E3 do as well).

The selenium meter is usually dead, and that’s okay: Selenium cells degrade over the decades, and replacements are unavailable (“So many of these meters have died, and still no drop-in replacement"). A working meter is a bonus, not a buying criterion, and even when it works, it often drifts. Don’t pay a “Meter working” premium; a handheld light meter or phone app belongs in every Rolleiflex bag anyway.

That is exactly where the cult of the meterless 3.5E comes from: F prices are inflated because the F series was the last major high-volume series, while the plain E produces identical negatives. A Photrio veteran says a Rollei dealer steered him away from the F toward the meterless 3.5E, “which he considered the best Rolleiflex made. He was not wrong."

The bayonet trap: Bay I, II, and III

The most common bad purchase when buying Rolleiflex accessories has nothing to do with the camera itself, but with the three bayonet sizes for filters, caps, and lens hoods. The common rule of thumb “Bay I for 3.5 models” is wrong; the sought-after 3.5 Planar/Xenotar models use Bay II:

Rolleicord and Yashica Mat: the honest alternatives

Rolleicord Vb: the smart choice for beginners

The Rolleicord is not a “cheap Rolleiflex,” but the same build quality minus the conveniences: a knob instead of a crank, manually cock the shutter, and no meter. The Schneider Xenar produces negatives indistinguishable from those of the Rolleiflex T’s Tessar. A Photrio classic puts it this way: “Unless you are an optical technician with access to a test bench, there is no difference between those two lenses … To avoid all that drudgery you pay 2-3 times more? Well, there's your answer.” The Vb (1962–77) is the best Cord, with a removable waist-level finder and interchangeable focusing screen. At EUR 120–200 in working condition, it is the most affordable serious entry into the 6x6 format. The only honest objection from the same thread: “You'll always want one [Flex] if you get the 'cord.”

Yashica Mat 124G: 90 percent for one-third of the price

The Japanese alternative. The Yashinon lens (Tessar type) is genuinely good. “damn the Yashica lens is fine,” even admits a Photrio moderator who considers the build quality clearly below Rollei’s level. That is exactly where the difference lies: more plastic, a more failure-prone film advance, and a light meter that is often dead. In return, a working example costs EUR 190–330 and is the only one here with a battery-powered CdS meter (which requires a 1.35 V cell, the familiar PX625 issue). 120 film and the first workflow

Every Rolleiflex shoots 6x6 on 120 roll film, producing twelve square exposures with more than four times the negative area of 35mm film. The leaf shutter synchronizes with flashes at up to 1/500 and is so quiet and low-vibration that handheld shots at shutter speeds long enough to make SLR photographers dream are possible.

The quick-start version: Load the film at the bottom and thread it under the silver guide roller (the most common beginner’s mistake), then crank until the automatic mechanism stops at frame 1. Meter the exposure externally. Set the aperture and shutter speed using the two knurled dials, focus through the ground glass, use the flip-up magnifier for fine-tuning, and get used to the fact that the waist-level finder shows a laterally reversed image: If you want the image to move left, move the camera to the right. After taking the shot, turn the crank three-quarters of a revolution forward and back; this advances the film and cocks the shutter at the same time.

The community consensus on films is stable: Kodak Tri-X 400 or Ilford HP5+ as black-and-white all-rounders (budget options: Kentmere 400, Fomapan), Portra 400 as the color “gold standard,” and Ektar 100 for landscapes. And if someone offers you 220 film: the format has been practically dead since 2018, so plan on using 120. The checklist

  1. Listen to the slow shutter speeds: Run through 1 s, 1/2, and 1/4. A gummy escapement makes them run too slowly or stick—the classic issue, not a dealbreaker, but a reason to negotiate the price: budget for a CLA.
  2. Only the lower lens counts: The taking lens creates the image; the upper one is only for the viewfinder image. Shine a flashlight through them: separation (rainbow-like edges) = walk away; etched fungus = permanent; haze and dust = usually cleanable.
  3. Focusing knob and ground glass: The knob must move smoothly and evenly, with a solid feel. Original screens are dark. Upgrades from Rick Oleson or Maxwell can make any old Rolleiflex feel like a new camera.
  4. Film advance and counter: Run through the crank cycles; the counter must reset when the back is opened. Note for modern films: The very thin backing paper on some current 120 films can fool the first-frame automation.
  5. Don’t worry about “missing light seals”: Rollei TLRs do not have foam by design. The back is sealed by a mechanical light trap plus fabric/velvet/cord, which practically lasts forever. Just check that the cord around the back is complete. (The crumbling problem affects Rollei SLRs such as the SL35, not the twin-lens models.)
  6. Selenium meters: see above; dead is normal, and there is no extra charge for a “working meter.”

CLA: Costs and Addresses

A complete overhaul (shutter, transport, focus adjustment) realistically costs EUR 250–650. In Germany, Paepke Fototechnik in Düsseldorf is the first port of call for twin-lens cameras (a documented 3.5F shutter service in early 2026: EUR 650, with a waiting time of up to six weeks); DW Photo in Braunschweig also works on Rolleis. Classic Fototechnik, likewise in Braunschweig, states on its own website that the owner has retired; the GX and Rolleis from before 1960 are no longer serviced there. Meine Spielzeuge sind eine Rolleicord und Yashica mat….. Die Rolleicord hat keine Batterie Probleme und die Yashica nimmt Problemlos 1,5 Volt.
Meist habe ich sowieso einen Lunasix dabei. Batterieadapter von Ausgeknipst mit Hoergeraete Batterien.
Dazu Nahlinsen, Weitwinkel und Televorsatz. Gegenlichtblenden von Ausgeknipst und Yashica….. Alles mit Ledertaschen…. Kameras und Spielzeug.
