Buying a Rolleiflex in 2026 is mostly a condition question, not a model question: Visually, the sought-after 2.8F is almost indistinguishable from the cheaper 3.5F, Planar and Xenotar are practically equivalent, and the selenium light meter is dead in most examples anyway. If you don’t need the crank, the Rolleicord Vb offers the same Rollei precision for a third of the price. This guide explains the model family, the three bayonet sizes, and what you really need to watch for when buying used.

The model family — and how to identify it by the lens
Franke & Heidecke built the twin-lens Rolleiflex from 1929 into the 1980s (and as GX/FX until 2015). For used purchases, the postwar models matter most. Roughly sorted:

You can identify the classes faster by the lens than by the nameplate: Crank with automatic first-frame detection = true Rolleiflex Automat line. Rotary knob = Rolleicord. Crank without first-frame automatic (start mark like on the Cord) = Rolleiflex T or GX/FX. A honeycomb window above the viewing lens reveals the selenium meter; "White Face" models (bare aluminum front, from ~1970/71) are late series with collector's premium.
Let's clear up one confusion right away: The 1956–59 model is called "3.5C" in German sources (Prochnow), and "3.5E" in English ones (Parker/Evans) — the same camera, two naming conventions. Keep this in mind when comparing on eBay.
The big question: 2.8 or 3.5?
The 2.8F is the poster model, the 3.5F costs several hundred euros less. What do you get for the extra cost? Two-thirds of a stop more light, a slightly brighter viewfinder image, shallower depth of field for subject isolation — and about 200 g more weight on an already front-heavy camera.
What you won't get: more sharpness. In the community, the opposite is more common — the late 6-element 3.5 Planar is repeatedly called the sharpest lens of the entire series. On photo.net a collector sums up the hierarchy as: 2.8 Planar most sought after, 2.8 Xenotar equally good but cheaper, “F3.5 Zeiss Planar: sharpest of all, but cheaper due to speed." And a Photrio user who owns both F models dryly writes: “Why f/3.5? Because the 2.8F in comparable condition is stupidly more expensive … I do not believe I have taken a single photo at the wide open aperture."
The best advice from 20 years of forum discussion
“Don't sweat the small stuff … A healthy sample is everything." Buy based on condition, not aperture number. A freshly serviced 3.5F beats a neglected 2.8F in every discipline — except for bragging rights.
Planar vs Xenotar — the argument over nothing
From 1952 (2.8) and 1956 (3.5) buyers could choose between Carl Zeiss Planar and Schneider-Kreuznach Xenotar — two parallel solutions to the same task, both five-element (the late 3.5 versions six-element). The Xenotar was about five percent cheaper from the factory. Sixty years later, the market still pays a premium for the Zeiss name, for which there is no optical equivalent.
Those who have owned both say things like this (Photrio): “I've owned both Xenotar and Planar and confirm there is no perceptible difference on the image … I got a better price for the Planar examples, probably because Zeiss has better marketing?" The consensus across all forums: sharpness is a tie, the Xenotar tends to handle flare slightly better. The deciding factor is something else — glass condition and a peculiarity of production: Rollei did not sort serial number batches by type. What is installed is indicated on the lens ring, not in the camera body serial number.
E vs F: What the extra cost really buys you
Optically, the E and F are identical. The difference lies in the light meter and the viewfinder: The E model has an uncoupled selenium meter (read off, values transferred manually) or none at all; the F is coupled via a differential gear to shutter speed and aperture — follow-up metering like a modern camera. Additionally, the F models have a brighter focusing screen and a removable light shaft for focusing screen upgrades (E2/E3 as well).
Warning: The selenium meter is usually dead — and that’s okay
Selenium cells degrade over decades, replacements don’t exist (“So many of these meters have died, and still no drop-in replacement"). A working meter is a bonus, not a buying criterion — and even if it works, it often drifts. Don’t pay a “meter working” premium; a handheld light meter or a phone app belongs in every Rolleiflex bag anyway.
This is exactly where the cult of the meterless 3.5E comes from: F prices are inflated because the F series was the last big volume series — the simple E delivers identical negatives. A Photrio veteran says a Rollei dealer steered him away from the F to the 3.5E without meter, “which he considered the best Rolleiflex made. He was not wrong."

The bayonet trap: Bay I, II, and III
The most common wrong purchase with Rolleiflex accessories has nothing to do with the camera but with three bayonet sizes for filters, caps, and lens hoods. The common rule of thumb “Bay I for 3.5” is wrong — the sought-after 3.5 Planar/Xenotar models use Bay II:

Rolleicord Vb: the smart choice for beginners
The Rolleicord is not a “cheap Rolleiflex,” but the same build quality minus comfort: rotary knob instead of crank, manual shutter cocking, no meter. The Schneider Xenar delivers negatives indistinguishable from the Tessar of the Rolleiflex T. A Photrio classic on this: “Unless you are an optical technician with access to a test bench, there is no difference between those two lenses … To avoid all that drudgery you pay 2-3 times more? Well, there's your answer.” The Vb (1962–77) is the best Cord — with removable viewfinder and interchangeable ground glass. For 120–200 EUR in working condition, it’s the cheapest serious entry into the 6x6 format. The only honest objection from the same thread: “You'll always want one [Flex] if you get the 'cord."
Yashica Mat 124G: 90 percent for a third of the price
The Japanese alternative. The Yashinon lens (Tessar type) is seriously good — “damn the Yashica lens is fine,” even admits a Photrio moderator who clearly sees the build quality below Rollei level. That’s exactly the difference: more plastic, more fragile winding, often dead light meter. But a working example costs 190–330 EUR and is the only one here with a battery-powered CdS meter (which needs a 1.35V cell — the well-known PX625 issue). Practice: 120 film and the first workflow
Every Rolleiflex exposes 6x6 on 120 roll film — twelve square shots with more than four times the negative area of 35mm. The leaf shutter syncs flashes up to 1/500 and is so quiet and vibration-free that long exposures handheld are possible, something SLR photographers can only dream of.
The quick start: Load the film at the bottom and thread it under the silver guide roller (the most common beginner mistake), crank until the automatic stops at frame 1. Measure exposure externally. Set aperture and shutter speed on the two knurled wheels, focus using the ground glass — with the folding magnifier for fine work — and get used to the fact that the viewfinder shows a reversed image: if the picture should go left, move the camera right. After releasing, crank three-quarters forward and back — this both advances and tensions the film.
The community consensus on films is stable: Kodak Tri-X 400 or Ilford HP5+ as black-and-white all-rounders (budget: Kentmere 400, Fomapan), Portra 400 as the color "gold standard," Ektar 100 for landscapes. And if you're offered 220 film: the format has been practically dead since 2018 — plan with 120. You can develop yourself or send it in; which labs work well is listed in our photo lab overview.

The checklist
- Listen for slow speeds: Switch through 1 s, 1/2, and 1/4. Resinized escapement makes them run too slow or stick — the classic, not a dealbreaker, but a price argument: plan for CLA.
- Only the lower lens counts: The taking lens makes the image, the upper only the viewfinder image. Shine a flashlight through: separation (rainbow-like edges) = stay away; etched mushroom = permanent; haze and dust = usually cleanable.
- Focus knob and ground glass: The knob must run smoothly and evenly. Original screens are dark — upgrades by Rick Oleson or Maxwell turn any old Rolleiflex into a new camera.
- Transport and counter: Cycle the crank, the counter must jump back when opening the back. Note for modern films: very thin backing paper of some current 120 films can trick the first frame automatic.
- No fear of "missing light seals": Rollei TLRs do not have foam by design — the back seals via a mechanical light trap plus fabric/velvet/cord, and that lasts practically forever. Just check the cord around the back for completeness. (The crumbling problem affects Rollei SLRs like the SL35 — not the twin-lens ones.)
- Selene meter: see above — dead is normal, no extra charge for "working meter".
CLA: costs and addresses
A complete overhaul (shutter, transport, focus adjustment) realistically costs 250–650 EUR. In Germany, Paepke Fototechnik in Düsseldorf is the top address for twin-lens reflex cameras (a documented 3.5F shutter service early 2026: 650 EUR, up to six weeks waiting time); Classic Fototechnik and DW Photo in Braunschweig also work on Rolleis.
