Nikon FM vs FM2 vs FE vs FE2 vs FM3a: Nikon’s Compact Classics Compared

Nikon FM, FM2, FE, FE2 and FM3a share a body, but differ on one fundamental question: mechanical or electronic. The FM line (FM, FM2, FM2n) works completely without a battery and needs one only for the light meter. The FE line (FE, FE2) offers aperture-priority autoexposure, but is almost completely inoperative when the battery is empty. The 2001 FM3a is the only camera ever to combine both, at two to three times the price. All use two SR44 button cells and accept every Ai and Ai-S Nikkor.

The family at a glance
In 1977, Nikon introduced the FM as a compact, affordable alternative to the professional F2, laying the foundation for a series that ran for almost 30 years. A year later came the FE, externally almost identical but completely different inside: electronic shutter, aperture-priority autoexposure. From then on, both lines ran in parallel. In 1982/83 came the FM2 and FE2 with the then-sensational 1/4000 shutter speed, the FM2n in 1984, and in 2001 the FM3a merged both worlds in a single body.
Two related models for context: The 1983 FA introduced the world's first matrix metering and remains underrated to this day. And beware of the FM10 and FE10, which share only the name with this family. Cosina built them from 1995 onward, with plastic bodies and simpler technology. They are no substitute for an FM2.
FM/FE versus F3, the question of size: The F3 from the same era is the professional camera: 100% viewfinder coverage, interchangeable prisms, built for continuous use, but around 200 g heavier and with flash sync of only 1/80. The FM/FE family is the more manageable everyday companion: ~540–590 g, faster sync, same lenses. Many photographers use both: the F3 for prestige on the shelf, the FM2n for the bag.

Mechanical or automatic: the real decision
Forget the model numbers for a moment. The family asks you exactly one question: Do you want a camera that works fully without a battery, or one that takes care of the shutter speed for you?
The FM line (FM, FM2, FM2n) is entirely mechanical. The two button cells power only the light meter with its three LEDs (+ o −). Battery dead? No problem—all shutter speeds continue to work; you simply meter with your phone or use Sunny 16. That is why the FM line is considered the tool for cold winters, long trips, and anyone who fundamentally distrusts electronics.
The FE line (FE, FE2) controls the shutter electronically and offers aperture-priority automation: choose the aperture, the camera sets the shutter speed, and the tracking needle in the viewfinder shows you at any time what it is doing. That is faster in everyday use, and Ken Rockwell also recommends the automatic models for this reason. The trade-off: without a battery, the FE is limited to a mechanical emergency speed of 1/90 (FE2: 1/250) plus B.
The FE drains batteries when stored switched on: A user from a vintage camera group put it succinctly: two fresh silver-oxide cells, dead after two and a half rolls. The FE’s metering circuit keeps running as long as the advance lever is left extended. When putting it away, always fold the lever all the way in, or remove the cells altogether.
The family’s insider tip, by the way, is the simple FE: It currently costs EUR 100–170, accepts Non-Ai lenses as one of only two cameras in the series, and in practice does almost everything its more expensive siblings can do. A reader on mrleica.com calls it “the most underrated manual focus Nikon of them all”—hard to disagree.
1/4000 and the titanium honeycomb shutter
When the FM2 appeared in 1982, 1/4000 second was a world first. It was made possible by ultra-thin titanium blades with an embossed honeycomb pattern, which were stiff enough to withstand the acceleration despite their minimal weight. The FE2 and early FM2n adopted the technology; by the late 1980s, Nikon had switched to smooth aluminum blades, which are considered less prone to damage.
For buying used, this means two things. First: The honeycomb pattern looks great, but it’s mechanically delicate; one careless tap of a finger while changing film can leave dents, and bent blades will eventually jam. Second: The myth of the indestructible FM2 shutter is exactly that—a myth. Plenty of photos of jammed honeycomb shutters circulate in the community. When buying, open the back, hold the shutter at B, and inspect the blades against the light.
Do you even need 1/4000? Rarely, but the faster flash sync (1/200 on the FM2, 1/250 from the FM2n/FE2 onward, instead of 1/125 on the FM/FE) is the better argument in everyday use with fill flash for the second generation.
FM3a: Masterpiece with a hype price
The FM3a really is technically unique: its hybrid shutter operates purely mechanically in Manual mode from 1 s to 1/4000, entirely without a battery, and electronically with stepless control up to 8 s in Aperture Priority. No other production camera has ever managed that. It also features match-needle metering, TTL flash metering, and 1/250 sync. CasualPhotophile calls it “a real masterpiece … the best manual focus Nikon SLR".
And yet experienced users advise against it in those same comment sections. The reason is on the price tag: EUR 750–1,100 privately, up to EUR 1,300 from a dealer. For that, you can get a very good FE2 and an FM2n together, or, as a photo.net user puts it: “two F3s that will last a few lifetimes". The sober truth: “The FE2 does pretty much everything the FM3a does and is much cheaper." You buy the FM3a out of passion, not reason. That’s legitimate—you just need to know it.
Battery: two SR44s, no adapter worries
The entire family runs on two 1.55 V button cells (SR44/LR44); the FE2 and FM3a can alternatively use a 3 V CR-1/3N lithium battery. No legacy mercury batteries, no voltage issues, no adapter—pleasantly straightforward compared with many classics from the previous generation.
Silver oxide instead of alkaline: The community agrees: SR44 (silver oxide) is the right choice because it maintains a constant voltage almost until the end, which is important for the FE/FE2’s voltage-sensitive metering electronics. LR44 (alkaline) voltage drops continuously and causes inaccurate readings toward the end. The price premium is minimal, while the service life is significantly longer.

Weak points and used-buying checklist
The FE line’s electronics risk
The weak point of the FE and FE2 is their control electronics. When it dies, the camera will only fire at its mechanical emergency speed, and hardly anyone can repair a circuit board from 1983 today; usually, the only option is a donor camera. One Reddit user describes the classic symptom: “After a mere 42 years my FE died … The mirror will move but the shutter only moves in the 1/90." The second wear point is the ring resistors beneath the shutter-speed and ASA dials. The symptom is a jumping, twitching needle—the well-known “jumpy needle syndrome” from Richard Haw’s repair guides.
What affects all of them
Light seals and mirror dampers crumble after 40 years in every camera from this era, and the crumbs often get into the shutter and jam it. This isn’t a dealbreaker, but a standard, inexpensive service (we stock replacements). Gummed-up mechanics show up as a mirror that sticks or a transport mechanism that is blocked. On the FM and FE, it’s also worth checking the battery compartment cover, which is prone to cracking. Used camera buying checklist
- Bring two fresh SR44 batteries; without them, you can’t properly assess the FE/FE2.
- Test the FE/FE2 twice: Without a battery, only the emergency speeds (1/90 and 1/250 respectively) and B should fire. With a battery, all speeds must work. If it still only fires at the emergency speed, the electronics are dead. Walk away.
- Watch the needle: steady and smooth? A jumping display = a worn-out variable resistor.
- FM2/FM2n/FE2: Inspect the blades. Open the back, hold B, and look against the light: dents or kinks in the honeycomb pattern are deal-breakers.
- Run through all shutter speeds, audibly counting 1 s; the mirror must never stick.
- Seals, battery compartment, covers: factor in sticky residue (cheap to fix); inspect carefully for corrosion and cracks.

Lens recommendations (Ai/Ai-S)
The real reason to buy an FM/FE today is the lens system: Ai and Ai-S Nikkors are among the finest manual-focus lenses ever made, readily available, and even mechanically compatible with modern Nikon DSLRs. Four proven starting points:

Only be careful with the FM2, FE2, and FM3a: they accept Ai/Ai-S lenses exclusively. Old non-Ai Nikkor lenses only fit the FM and FE when the coupling lever is folded up.

Dear Vlad, Tank you for this really if not wonderfull artikel. As an old Leica and Hasselblad nut and professor of photography, I learned to use Leicas with an old Pro, also darkroom, until the R8/R9 miscarrage that almost ruined Leica.
