1. The Canon Scoopic family at a glance

Canon introduced the first Scoopic in 1965. At a time when 16 mm cameras were either bulky or complicated, the Scoopic offered something new: a compact, ready-to-use camera with a built-in zoom lens, automatic exposure, and quick film loading. No spring-winding like the Bolex—the Scoopic ran electrically.

It was designed for news cameramen, documentary filmmakers, and industrial filmmakers. For anyone who needed to film quickly without spending ten minutes adjusting their equipment first. The Scoopic became the best-selling 16 mm camera in its class.

Between 1965 and 1977, Canon released five model variants. Each built on the previous one, with gradual improvements to the viewfinder, exposure, speed range, and accessory compatibility. The basic idea remained the same: a rugged all-in-one camera that you could take out of its case and start filming with immediately.

Scoopic vs. Bolex, the eternal question: The Bolex H16 is the other great 16 mm legend. But the two solve different problems. The Bolex has interchangeable lenses and a spring-wound motor; it needs no battery, but allows a maximum of about 28 seconds of filming per wind. The Scoopic has a fixed zoom lens and an electric motor, so it runs continuously as long as the battery lasts. If you need speed and uncomplicated handling, choose the Scoopic. If you want lens variety and mechanical independence, choose the Bolex.

Prices vary widely: Market prices for Scoopic cameras have risen in recent years because 16mm film is experiencing a renaissance in general. An untested camera without a battery test may be available for USD 400, but without any guarantee that it works. A CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust) costs another USD 200–500 on top. So always calculate the total price: camera + battery + CLA.

What really distinguishes the models?

The core technology is identical across all models: SLR viewfinder, CdS exposure automation, and a permanently mounted 12.5–75mm zoom lens with a 6:1 ratio. What changes are three things:

1. Frame-rate range. The original 16 and the 16S offer only 16 and 24 fps. Starting with the 16M, 32, 48, and 64 fps are added, along with single-frame operation. Anyone who wants to shoot slow motion or stop motion needs at least a 16M.

2. Macro. The lens is macro-capable only from the 16M onward. The macro function allows shooting from as close as approximately 7.5 cm from the front lens element, useful for detail shots, title cards, and text panels.

3. Film capacity. Only the 16MS can be used with an external 400ft magazine (Mitchell or Cinema Products CP16R). That is about 11 minutes of film at 24 fps, compared with just under 3 minutes with the standard 100ft reel.

3. The battery problem and how to solve it

This is where most Scoopic purchases fail or at least stall. Every Canon Scoopic runs on a proprietary 12V NiCd battery pack. These batteries have not been produced for decades. Almost all original packs are now dead. Nickel-cadmium cells irreversibly lose capacity after 20–30 years.

Without a working battery, the Scoopic is a paperweight. The motor won't run, the light meter won't work, and the film won't advance. Everything depends on the battery.

The three solutions

Option 1: Recelling. Have the old NiCd cells in the original housing replaced with new NiMH cells. It works, but costs USD 80–150 from a specialist and requires soldering. The original housing is retained, which looks clean aesthetically.

Option 2: AA battery adapter (recommended). An adapter that holds standard AA batteries in the correct configuration and fits directly into the camera's battery compartment. Advantages: AA batteries are available worldwide, can be replaced immediately, and NiMH AA rechargeable batteries can be charged externally. No soldering required.

Option 3: External power pack. Some users modify their camera for external power via an XLR connector. It works, but permanently changes the camera and is not a reversible solution.

The correct voltage for each model: The Scoopic 16M, MN, and MS require 12V. With 10 NiMH AA rechargeable batteries (1.2V each), you get exactly 12V. With 10 alkaline AAs (1.5V each), you get 15V; this works, but the higher voltage can affect the motor speed. Recommendation: Use NiMH rechargeable batteries.

The original Scoopic 16 and 16S use a different battery format. These fit 8 AAA cells: 8x 1.2V NiMH = 9.6V, or 8x 1.5V alkaline = 12V.

Both adapters are ready to use immediately: insert the AA cells, place the adapter in the camera, and twist. No soldering and no camera modification. And when the batteries run out after a day of shooting, simply replace them with fresh ones.

4. Which Scoopic is right for you?

The decision depends on three factors: budget, intended use, and how much effort you want to invest in refurbishment.

For beginners: Canon Scoopic 16 or 16S

The most affordable option. Often available for under USD 1,000, sometimes even under USD 500 for untested examples. The limitation: only 16 and 24 fps, no macro, and a darker viewfinder. That is enough for getting started with 16mm. The viewfinder is noticeably darker than on the M variants, making focusing indoors a challenge.

The sweet spot: Canon Scoopic 16M or 16MN

The 16M is the model that satisfies most users. Macro zoom, extended frame rates up to 64 fps, and a significantly better viewfinder. The price difference from the original 16 is often only USD 200–400, but you get a much more versatile tool. The 16MN is essentially a 16M with refined automatic exposure. On the used market, both are often sold at the same price.

For professionals and enthusiasts: Canon Scoopic 16MS

The 16MS is the most technically advanced model. Its key advantage: compatibility with 400ft magazines. Instead of barely 3 minutes of film per load (100ft at 24 fps), you get around 11 minutes. But you pay a premium for both the camera and the magazine (purchased separately, often USD 500+). The 16MS is the choice for serious productions.

What to look for when buying: 1. Ask about the battery status. Has the seller tested the camera? With which battery? A function-test video is worth its weight in gold.
2. Check the gate condition. The film gate must be clean and scratch-free. Scratches in the gate will ruin every film.
3. Motor noise. All Scoopics are loud, but uneven humming, rattling, or stopping at certain speeds indicates a motor problem.
4. Plan for a CLA. For every used Scoopic, you should budget USD 200–500 for a CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust). Old grease hardens and speeds drift.

5. First test roll: choose and develop film

You bought a Scoopic and the battery works—what next? Before running a full 100 ft roll through the camera, you should start with a short test strip. Why? Because this lets you check whether the film transport runs smoothly, whether the shutter opens and closes correctly, and whether the exposure is right, without immediately risking EUR 30–50 worth of film.

Film recommendations for the Scoopic

Kodak Vision3 250D (7207). The standard 16mm film for daylight. ISO 250, fine grain, excellent colors. Must be processed in ECN-2 (not C-41). The safest choice for outdoor shooting.

Kodak Vision3 500T (7219). The tungsten film for low light and indoor shooting. ISO 500; requires an 85 conversion filter in daylight (then effectively ISO 320). Also processed in ECN-2.

Fomapan R100 (B&W reversal film). A reversible black-and-white film that produces positives directly. Ready for projection without scanning. ISO 100. Can be developed at home.

ORWO UN54 or N74 Plus (B&W negative). Affordable alternative from Germany. The UN54 (ISO 100) is a solid all-rounder. Can be developed at home in standard D-76 or Rodinal.

Develop a test strip first, then the entire film

Cut a 30–50 cm strip from a 100 ft roll (in the dark or in a changing bag). Load the short strip into the camera, shoot 10–15 seconds of test footage, and develop the strip yourself. This lets you check whether your Scoopic is working properly before exposing the rest of the film.

To develop 16mm film yourself, you need a developing reel that fits in standard developing tanks. 16mm film is exactly as wide as 110 Pocket film, so both formats fit on the same reel.

The reel fits in Jobo 15xx and Paterson/AP/Kaiser tanks, making it compatible with by far the most common standard tanks. Up to four reels fit in a tank that is normally designed for two 35mm films.

Cutting the corners before loading: Cut the corners of the beginning of the film at a 45° angle before threading it onto the reel. This allows the film to slide into the guide much more easily and prevents it from getting stuck.

6. Care, Maintenance and Protection

A Canon Scoopic is a precision mechanical machine. Treated with care, it will last another 60 years. Neglected, it will quickly become unusable.

Clean the gate

After every film change: Open the gate and remove film dust with a soft brush or blower. Film dust in the gate causes scratches on the film and dark spots in the image. Do not use solvents directly in the gate; a dry, clean brush is sufficient.

Lens care

The Scoopic's built-in zoom lens is not interchangeable. A scratch on the front element is permanent. Always use a UV filter (72 mm thread on the original model; check the other variants). Dust on the lens: use a blower first, then a microfiber cloth. Do not wipe directly.

Protect the C-mount

The Scoopic's lens mount is a C-mount, a 1-inch screw thread (1" x 32 TPI) that has been the standard for 16mm cameras since the 1920s. Even though the zoom lens is permanently built in, the camera opening should be protected during storage and transport. A matching C-mount body cap prevents dust from settling on the internal mirror mechanism and protects the rear lens element.

Storage

Always remove the battery before long-term storage. NiCd and NiMH cells can be permanently damaged by deep discharge, and leaking battery acid in a 50-year-old camera is a nightmare. Store the camera in a dry, dust-free room. Silica gel packets in the case help protect against moisture.

Run the motor regularly: The Scoopic's electric motor should be switched on briefly at least every few months, even without film. Motors sitting with old grease can seize up. A few seconds of idling keep the mechanism running smoothly. Better still: run an inexpensive dummy film (film leader) through the camera.
