How to replace the battery cover on your Canon AE-1 or A-1

The battery doors on the old Canon A series are unfortunately notorious for eventually giving up the ghost and breaking off. But hey, don’t panic! We tackled the problem and developed a perfectly fitting replacement battery door for Canon AE-1 / A-1, which we offer directly in our shop. Here I’ll show you how to easily remove the defective door, save the important original parts, and install our replacement. And stay tuned until the end, because I also have a little bonus tip for the often-missing winder cover.

What you need

• The replacement battery door (available in our shop)
• A slim, pointed lever or punch (to unlock the hinge)
• A small Phillips screwdriver (for the locking mechanism)
• Tweezers or fine needle-nose pliers
• WD-40 (or something similar for cleaning/lubricating) and a paper towel
• A flat surface to prevent the tiny parts from disappearing

What you reuse from the old door

It’s important to know that our 3D-printed door comes without the internal locking metal piece. So you absolutely need to save the long metal pin and the small screw (along with the plastic plate) from your old, broken door. Without these original parts, the new door will not stay in place.

Step-by-step guide

1. Disconnect the power and open the door. First, remove the battery (4LR44) and open the door as far as possible.

1. Release the hinge. Grab your pointed tool and press the hinge in the appropriate direction until you can feel it “click” or give way. With a little gentle force, you can push out the metal pin, after which you can simply wiggle out the old door. Be careful with the small metal or plastic part and put everything somewhere safe.

1. Remove the locking mechanism. Since our replacement part does not have an integrated lock, you need to “transplant” the locking mechanism from your old door. For this, you need the Phillips screwdriver. It’s only one screw, but be careful—the parts are tiny!

1. Clean the hinge if necessary. Hinges are often dirty and stuck after decades of use. Since you already have the pin out, give it a wipe with a little WD-40 on a paper towel. This will help the new part move smoothly later.

1. Insert the locking piece into the new door. Now it’s time to fit the small part into the new battery door. Carefully insert the small component using fine pliers or tweezers. As a guide, the short section points toward the camera, while the long section points toward the door.

1. Insert the door into the camera body. Slide the hinge head into the mount on the camera. Use a tool to push the pin fully into the groove until the door is securely seated.

1. Fine adjustment and testing. Is anything still loose? Then push the hinge pin in a little farther. The door should sit firmly without sticking. Aligning the small locking piece can be a bit fiddly. Patience is your best friend here.

1. Insert the battery and finish up. Put the 4LR44 battery back in and close the door. It should click securely into place and open as it did before.

Tips and common problems

• Managing the parts: Use a magnetic tray. Nothing is more annoying than searching for the tiny original screw in the carpet.
• Is the door loose? Usually, the pin just needs to go another millimeter deeper into the lock.
• Hinge sticking: A tiny bit of WD-40 works wonders, but please don’t drown the camera in oil.
• Original parts are essential: The long plastic part from the original lock must be intact, otherwise our replacement door will not lock properly.

A little Easter egg: replacing the winder cover

Is the small round cover for the motor drive also missing from the bottom of your camera? We know that problem all too well.
