Canon Scoopic Buying Guide: All 16mm Models Compared

The Canon Scoopic was the first 16 mm film camera with a permanently built-in zoom lens, and it remains one of the easiest cameras to use for shooting on 16 mm: load a daylight spool, turn on the motor, and the aperture adjusts itself. This guide shows which models are available, how to tell them apart, how to solve the battery problem, what a Scoopic costs today, and where to find help.

In September 2026, we completely reviewed the article. The basis was the Canon Camera Museum website, the original 16M instruction manual, and Canon brochures from the 1970s. In the first version, we found several errors, including incorrect production years and a “16S” model that Canon never built. Both have been corrected, and all sources are listed at the end of the article.

1. Which Scoopic models did Canon build?

The camera gets its name from “scoop,” the word used by news professionals for an exclusive story. Canon launched the Scoopic 16 in June 1965, designed for television news and documentaries. Its innovation was the combination of a built-in zoom, electric motor, and automatic exposure. Anyone shooting with a Bolex H16 at the time had to wind the spring motor and set the aperture by hand; the Scoopic ran at the press of a button and threaded the film semi-automatically.

In the 16M instruction manual, Canon calls the Scoopic the best-selling automatic handheld camera for television news in the United States. This is Canon’s own advertising claim; we have not found independent sales figures to support it.

There are exactly four silent Scoopic models for 16 mm film:

  • Scoopic 16 (June 1965): the original gray model with a 13–76 mm zoom and an f/1.6 aperture, without macro.
  • Scoopic 16M (April 1973): new 12.5–75 mm macro zoom with single-frame shooting and up to 64 frames per second. According to Canon, the first 16 mm camera with a macro lens.
  • Scoopic 16MN (September 1974): based on the 16M, it added a filter compartment, a remote trigger, and a lock for 24 frames per second, but lost the single-frame mode.
  • Scoopic 16MS (1977): the final model, again with single-frame shooting, an optional 25 instead of 24 frames per second, and the ability to attach a 400-foot magazine.

Is there a Scoopic 16S?

Canon's own documentation contains no reference to a 16S, neither in the Camera Museum nor in manuals or brochures. The name appears mainly among replacement-battery sellers, who use it to refer to the gray Scoopic 16 with the 13–76 mm lens. We had included the 16S as a separate model in the first version of this article without verifying it. Because the name is widespread among sellers and in classified ads, our battery adapter for the gray Scoopic is still called “16, 16S.”

Which other cameras are called Scoopic but are something else?

Other Canon cameras were also sold under the name Scoopic and are often confused in classified ads. The Sound Scoopic 100 and 200 (from 1970), as well as the 200S, 200SE, and 200S10 (1972), are 16 mm sound cameras for film with a magnetic soundtrack, and their batteries operate at 24 rather than 12 volts. The 200S10 is the only one with an interchangeable lens, using a Canon mount. The Canon Zoom DS-8 from 1970 uses the Scoopic's body design but exposes Double Super 8 film. These cameras are not covered in this guide.

Scoopic or Bolex?

The Bolex H16 is the other great 16 mm legend, and the two solve different problems. The Bolex has interchangeable lenses and a spring motor, so it does not need power, but each wind only manages around 18 feet of film, which according to the Bolex manual is about 28 seconds at 24 frames per second. The Scoopic has a fixed zoom and an electric motor. This lets it run through a 100-foot roll continuously for just under three minutes, as long as the battery lasts. If you want to shoot quickly without changing lenses, the Scoopic is the better choice. If you want to change lenses or work entirely without a battery, choose the Bolex. In a Reddit thread from August 2026, owners of both cameras reached the same conclusion.

The table summarizes the data from the Canon Camera Museum, the manual and brochure for the 16M, and the brochure for the 16MS. Where the sources contradict each other, this is noted.

All four expose standard 16 mm (Regular 16) and accept film perforated on one or both sides.

Which differences really matter when filming

The gray 16 is almost a camera of its own. Its lens has no macro function, a microprism rather than a ground glass is used for focusing, and its smaller battery does not fit the later models. In 1973, a tester for the Filmmakers Newsletter found its viewfinder image bright but difficult to focus. The narrower shutter sector also makes a difference: 135° instead of 170° means around one-third of a stop less light per frame than with the 16M.

The later letter does not automatically mean more features. The 16MN came after the 16M, but cannot shoot single frames. Anyone wanting to shoot stop-motion, animation, or time-lapse needs a 16M or 16MS. According to the 16M brochure, the automatic exposure also does not work for single-frame shooting and macro. Canon recommends measuring the exposure with the automatic system at 16 frames per second and then setting the displayed aperture value manually.

T2.5 instead of f/1.8 has a reason. In the 16M, 16MN, and 16MS, a permanently installed beam splitter directs some of the light into the viewfinder. As a result, less light reaches the film, so Canon labels the aperture scale directly in T-stops. For you, that means you can transfer the reading from a handheld light meter directly according to the manual: if it shows f/4, set T4. Anyone searching for “Canon Scoopic 12.5-75mm f/2.5” usually ends up with precisely this T2.5 specification. A 12.5–75 mm lens with f/2.5, on the other hand, was used by the Sound Scoopic 100, for example. According to many owners, the zoom is particularly sharp between T4 and T8, wide open and fully stopped down it will become softer.

The metering cell does not see any filters. The automatic exposure system meters through its own small window, not through the lens. A filter in front of the front lens therefore reduces the light without the automatic system noticing. In the 16M manual, Canon says to divide the ASA rating by the filter factor and set that value. For ND filters, Canon also offered a matching compensation filter for the metering window.

400 ft is available only on the 16MS, and only with accessories. A 400 ft magazine of the Mitchell or Cinema Products CP-16 type attaches via an adapter on top of the battery compartment. With the magazine, you can shoot just over eleven minutes of film at a time instead of just under three, but according to the Canon Museum, the camera also becomes 2.7 kg heavier. Owners describe the adapter on Reddit as extremely rare. Without it, the 16MS’s main advantages over the 16MN are the single-frame mode and the 25 fps option.

Can the Scoopic record synchronized sound?

Not from the factory. The Scoopic is a loud camera without quartz control, so sound is added later. Canon offered a sound blimp for it, which, according to the 16MS brochure, reduces the operating noise to a level suitable for sound recording, and a separate quartz control for the 16M. You can recognize such modified cameras by an additional LED on the left side and a switch on the right. In a video, The Cinematography Lab shows that some of these cameras run with quartz accuracy only at 25 frames per second, and that the switch must be off at all other speeds. The Film Group in the USA offers an upgrade for the M and MS on an undated page for USD 650. We could not confirm whether the provider still performs upgrades today, so ask first.

Can it shoot Super 16 or Ultra 16?

Super 16 is practically impossible with the Scoopic: the image gate would have to be widened on one side, and the lens would have to move with it, which is not possible with the fixed zoom lens. Ultra 16 widens the gate on both sides and has been done to Scoopics, as owners have cinematography.com report. However, the best-known modifier, Super 16 Inc., no longer exists, and a camera technician advises against using the Scoopic as a conversion base in the same thread.

3. Why almost every Scoopic needs a new battery

This is where most Scoopic purchases grind to a halt. All four silent models run on their own 12-volt nickel-cadmium battery from Canon, which, according to the Canon Camera Museum, powers both the film transport and the shutter priority. Without a battery, no film moves through the camera, and the aperture also remains stopped. The newest original packs are decades old. When buying, therefore, expect the included battery not to hold a charge anymore. In the thread “Canon Scoopic Problems”, a motor that was slowing down or stopping could usually be fixed simply with a fresh battery.

Two battery families that are not compatible

The gray Scoopic 16 has a smaller battery that, according to Canon, lasts for eight 100-ft rolls at 24 frames per second. The 16M, 16MN, and 16MS share the larger S-12 battery, which lasts for 16 rolls. In 1973, the tester for Filmmakers Newsletter described the 16M's battery as about twice the size of the 16's. The two designs are not interchangeable. If you have a gray 16 and see a used “Scoopic battery,” check beforehand which of the two families it was made for.

How to get the camera running again

Have the original rebuilt. New cells are installed in the old housing. As a mail-in service, this costs around 95 to 130 USD in September 2026, for example through Imaging Alliance in California or through Java Photo on eBay. Ready-made new batteries cost 155 USD for the M series and 175 USD for the gray 16 at Imaging Alliance, and 200 USD for the M series at Du-All Camera in New Jersey. You should not leave rebuilt batteries connected to the old Canon charger for hours; owners and dealers warn against this. A modern charger with automatic shutoff is safer.

Use an adapter for standard cells. The adapter sits in the battery compartment instead of the old pack and holds standard AA or AAA cells. Replace the cells with freshly charged ones after the day’s shooting, and no soldering is required. We offer adapters (see below), and Imaging Alliance is one example of another supplier. If you want to print one yourself, Printables has a shell for the S-12 battery that takes a custom 12-volt pack; we have not found a printable file for the gray 16.

Power externally. Every Scoopic has a factory-installed socket for an external battery, and Canon sold a battery box for it. The socket is not an XLR connector but a small four-pin plug. According to owners on Reddit, the 16M needs 12 volts for the motor and a separate 6 volts for the meter cell; one owner found a suitable Amphenol MS3116F8-4S plug. The gray 16 has an even smaller socket that is no longer manufactured. If a camera has an XLR socket installed, it was retrofitted.

Our adapters for the Scoopic

Disclaimer: We sell some of the products mentioned here, including the two battery adapters. Nevertheless, this article is primarily intended as a helpful resource, not as sales copy. Where someone else has a better solution, we have included it here as well.

For the 16M, 16MN, and 16MS, we offer our S-12 battery adapter. It fits into the original battery compartment and holds ten AA rechargeable batteries. With 1.2-volt NiMH rechargeable batteries, that produces the original 12 volts. Alkaline batteries must not be used; ten of them would produce 15 volts. Charge the rechargeable batteries outside the camera in a standard charger. This adapter does not fit the gray Scoopic 16.

There is a dedicated battery adapter for eight AAA cells for the gray Scoopic 16. Since September 2026, two specially developed circuit boards have been installed on the contacts so that the adapter works in the battery compartment without any intermittent contact. With eight NiMH rechargeable batteries, it provides 9.6 volts; with alkaline batteries, 12 volts. An American retailer specifies 12 to 15 volts for its AAA holder, and Reddit users warn that rechargeable batteries might be too weak. Anto tested this with us using eight NiMH rechargeable batteries, and the camera runs without any problems. We recommend 1,100 mAh AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries. Never mix different cell types or voltages, and never connect Canon’s original charger to the adapter.

4. Which Scoopic is right for you, and how much does it cost?

The decision comes down to three questions: Do you need single-frame shooting or macro, is a 100-ft roll enough for you, and how much do you want to invest in a battery and servicing?

The gray Scoopic 16 when you want to spend less

The 16 is the oldest model and usually the least expensive. On paper, its f/1.6 lens is faster than the macro zoom on the later models. However, it lacks macro, single-frame shooting, and 64 frames per second, and its viewfinder is harder to focus. Plan on supplying your own smaller battery: replacements for the M series do not fit here.

The 16M for macro, single-frame shooting, and slow motion

The 16M has everything that defines the Scoopic range: macro zoom, single-frame shooting, 16 to 64 frames per second, and the large S-12 battery. If you are not sure exactly what you want to shoot, it is the safest choice. This is also reflected in the price: well-preserved 16M cameras are now among the most expensive Scoopics.

The 16MN for reportage without single-frame shooting

The 16MN was built for television crews: a filter slot for quick changes, a remote trigger, and a lockout for 24 frames per second. Without single-frame shooting, it is the wrong choice for stop-motion, but for reportage and everyday use it is just as good as the 16M, and recently it has traded for less on the used market.

The 16MS, if the magazine is included

The 16MS is the latest and most advanced model, with single-frame shooting, a filter slot, and a choice of 25 frames per second, which helps when working with European 25p video. However, its real advantage, the 400-ft magazine, is only included if the adapter and magazine come with the camera.

How much a Scoopic costs in 2026

Prices have risen significantly in recent years. The following overview shows the listings and documented sales we found in September 2026. Most records come from eBay USA and US dealers, which is why the prices are predominantly in dollars.

The battery and servicing must also be factored in. We could not find a current, dated price for servicing a Scoopic at any workshop, so get a quote beforehand. Always calculate the total price for the camera, battery, and servicing.

What you should ask the seller

  • Which battery was the camera tested with, and is there a video showing it running?
  • Has it been serviced, when, and by whom? Owners report that cameras advertised as “mint” by Japanese resellers are often only cosmetically nice and fail on the first shoot.
  • Has anything been modified, such as an XLR socket, crystal sync, or Ultra 16?

What to look out for when testing

  • Run the camera without film only at 16 and 24 frames per second. Canon explicitly prohibits using the high speeds without film loaded in the 16M manual.
  • Run the test with the side cover closed. Camera technician Dom Jaeger explains in the thread “Canon Scoopic Problems” that the loop formers open only when the cover is closed; with the cover open, the film brakes and makes the motor appear weak.
  • In automatic mode, check whether the aperture visibly opens and closes when you pan from the window into a dark room. On the gray 16, the viewfinder image does not get darker; according to cinematography.com Intentional, not a defect; look into the lens from the front to check.
  • Shine a flashlight through the lens. A slight haze need not be a dealbreaker, as this test roll from a 16MS with fungus in the lens shows, but it does lower the price. If the zoom is sharp only in the center, it belongs with the technician.
  • Check the battery compartment. Leaking cells leave corrosion on the contacts.
  • Check the seals on the side cover. Romping Bronco tapes over the seams on its cameras because they often let light through.

Where to buy a Scoopic

The largest selection is on eBay, especially in the US and Japan. Checked cameras from dealers are rarer, such as a serviced Scoopic 16 tested with film at The Film Wave in the US (pre-order) or a working camera with newly rebuilt batteries at CameraCrate in the UK (recently sold out). Cameras also appear in the cinematography.com marketplace and in the Facebook group for Scoopic owners. If you buy in Europe, bear in mind that there are hardly any repair shops for the Scoopic here (more on this in Chapter 7).

5. Which film belongs in the Scoopic

The Scoopic takes 100-ft daylight spools. They can be loaded in subdued light; a changing bag is not necessary, although the first and last few seconds of the roll will be exposed to light. Threading is semi-automatic. With the 16M, you cut the beginning of the film straight using the built-in film cutter, push it into the guide, and the camera threads it automatically onto the take-up spool.

Sources: Kodak US price catalog, Wittner Cinetec, Foma. Vision3 films are processed using the ECN-2 process, not C-41. In Germany, for example, Andec Filmtechnik in Berlin develops and scans 16 mm film and also sells raw stock.

Pay attention to your camera’s ASA range. The gray 16 can only be set up to ASA 320. So you expose Vision3 500T at 320, which is just under two-thirds of a stop more light, and color negative film generally handles this well. The M models go up to ASA 640 and therefore cover all the films in the table.

You must account for filters in front of the lens manually. Because the metering cell does not look through the lens, it does not detect a conversion filter. Kodak rates 500T with an 85 filter in daylight at ISO 320. Set this value on the camera as soon as the filter is in front of the lens.

In midday sun, the aperture reaches its limit. At 24 frames per second, the M series exposes each frame for 1/51 of a second (the 16M manual), and the lens does not stop down beyond T22. According to the Sunny 16 rule of thumb, a 250D would then require about an aperture of 35 in bright sun. With 250D, you therefore overexpose by about one stop; with 500T and an 85 filter, by just under two stops. A 50D or Ektachrome 100D, on the other hand, still fits within the aperture range. If you shoot outdoors with high-speed film, use an ND filter: on MN and MS one for the filter compartment, otherwise one for the 72 mm thread. In both cases, set the ASA value after converting it, because the metering cell does not see the filter.

Test a piece of film first, then the entire roll

The first mistakes happen when loading. In his video, Linus shows that his first roll came out blurry because he had not tightened the pressure plate again after threading the film. According to a Reddit thread with a lab diagnosis, smeared, unsteady images are usually caused by an upper film loop that is too small; with the correct loop, the camera also runs audibly more smoothly. So practice loading it first with a piece of scrap film.

You can develop an exposure test yourself by cutting off a piece of the exposed roll in the dark. For this, you need a reel that accommodates 16 mm-wide film. 16 mm film is exactly as wide as 110 pocket film, so both fit on the same reel. Our developing reel for 16 mm and 110 is available for Paterson tanks (also AP and Kaiser) and for Jobo 15xx. The reel holds around 1.3 meters of film, which is about 170 frames for 16 mm, or just over seven seconds at 24 frames per second, enough for a test with several apertures. Cut the corners of the film leader at an angle so the film slides more easily into the guide.

6. How to keep your Scoopic ready for use

Clean the film path after every roll change. Dust and hair in the gate cause scratches and dark edges in the image, and according to owners on cinematography.com, hairs often show up in the middle of a roll. Lift the pressure plate, blow out the gate with a blower, and use a wooden stick for stubborn debris, never metal.

The lens cannot be changed. Protecting the front lens is therefore all the more worthwhile. All four models have a 72 mm filter thread; a clear protective filter in this size is the cheapest insurance. According to Canon, the 16M and 16MS came with a 75 mm lens cap and a 72 mm lens hood. If the cap is missing, a 72 mm screw-in cap protects the lens just as well.

Close the viewfinder shutter. The 16M, 16MN, and 16MS have a shutter on the viewfinder. Canon warns in the manual that strong light entering through the open viewfinder can fog the film. Close it when the camera is on a tripod or you are not looking through it.

Take precautions in freezing temperatures. According to the 16M manual, film becomes stiff at 0 °C and below, so the camera manages fewer frames at 48 and 64 frames per second. Canon recommended a cold-weather cover and keeping the battery in the external battery box, which you keep warm with your body heat.

Check the running speed. After installing a new battery or servicing the camera, it is worth checking whether it is actually running at 24 frames per second. The Cinematography Lab shows how to do this with a stroboscope app on your phone:

Remove the battery or adapter during longer storage. Leaking cells can cause more damage in a 50-year-old camera than any fall. Store the camera in a dry place; a bag of silica gel in the case helps.

Repairs should be left to experienced hands. Technicians describe the Scoopic as not very service-friendly. This repair of a 16M, in which a shutter priority gear broke, shows how quickly a DIY attempt can go wrong.

Who still repairs the Scoopic today

In Europe, we found no workshop that explicitly offers Scoopic service, and owners confirm this in forums in 2022, 2024, and 2026. The realistic option is shipping it to the USA.

  • Du-All Camera (New Jersey, USA): repair and maintenance of film cameras, repeatedly recommended by Scoopic owners between 2022 and 2025, as well as batteries and accessories.
  • Imaging Alliance (California, USA): new batteries, chargers, adapters, and rebuilding for both battery families.
  • The Film Wave (USA): rebuilt batteries for the gray 16 and serviced cameras.
  • The Film Group (USA): retrofitting of quartz control for the M and MS; we could not confirm whether the provider is still active.
