Without a battery, the mechanical shutter still works at every speed and on B, but the light meter needs the battery. [1]
To take a meter reading, the shutter has to be cocked and the film advance lever pulled out slightly. [1]
To change the battery, you have to take off the camera back; the manual recommends checking the battery before changing film. [1]
