Rolleiflex 6000 Series: SLX, 6006, 6008, 6001, 6003, AF — Identify and compare models

You have a black 6×6 camera in front of you. It is heavy, has a waist-level finder, and somewhere it says “Rolleiflex.” But which one is it? Between 1976 and 2015, Rollei built fourteen different bodies under the 6000 series umbrella, and the names only help to a limited extent. There are almost fifteen years of development between a 6008 Professional and a 6008 Integral 2. A 6006 and a 6006 Model 2, meanwhile, look almost identical from the outside but require fuses of different ratings: 0.8 ampere for one, 1 ampere for the other. Using the wrong one risks damaging the electronics.
The structure follows the order in which these questions usually arise. First, you determine which device you have in front of you. Then we compare what the individual models can do. A comparison alone, however, is no help to anyone facing a specific buying decision. That is why each chapter also explains what you need to look out for: with lenses, magazines, and when buying used.
A Note About Our Own Interests
The biggest problem with the 6000 series is its power supply. None of these cameras works without a battery, and finding a suitable battery is where most people get stuck. We built our own solution for this. You should know that before reading Chapter 3.
Even so, this is not an advertorial. It is primarily a guide for everyone interested in the Rolleiflex 6000 system and just as enthusiastic about it as we are. That is why our own solution is not presented as the only option. When it comes to batteries, we also mention workshops that replace cells, ready-made replacement packs from other suppliers, the mains-powered route, and what can be found on eBay and through resellers offering refurbishment services. In several places in this article, the better answer is simply something other than ours.
The most important source first: By far the most comprehensive work on the 6000 series is F. W. Stutterheim’s private reference site, rolleiflex6000.rolleigraphy.eu. It contains complete comparison tables for all models, data sheets, manuals, and verified service addresses, maintained and marked with revision dates. A large part of the technical information in this article comes from there. If you want to go deeper, that is the place to visit—not this page.

1. Which model do I have in front of me?
Let’s start with the good news: In the vast majority of cases, the model name is displayed on the front. On the narrow plate beneath the waist-level finder, directly above the bayonet mount. It says “Rolleiflex SLX,” “Rolleiflex 6006,” or “Rolleiflex 6008 professional.”

That usually settles the question. It gets interesting in the cases where the lettering is not enough, and there are three of them.
Case 1: It only says “SLX”
The SLX was built in two series. The first ran from September 1976 to December 1979, the second from September 1978 to July 1985. Both are simply called “Rolleiflex SLX”; in the literature, they are referred to as “Old Face” and “New Face,” or SLX and SLX 2.
In practice, you can distinguish them by the serial number. The early SLX cameras have a sequential seven-digit number from 4 800 000 to 4 808 000. Anything with a nine-digit number is a later camera; more on that shortly.
Why it matters: The early series had documented electronic problems. Stutterheim puts it dryly: the examples still working today are the good ones. An SLX that works flawlessly in 2026 has already survived the selection process.

Case 2: Two bodies, one name—6006 and 6006 Model 2
The 6006 was produced from January 1984 to April 1989, and the 6006 Model 2 from April 1989 to January 1993. The difference is subtle from the outside: the Model 2 lacks the mechanical cable release socket, but supports multiple exposures.
This is not a minor detail for collectors. The two require different fuses—0.8 A for the 6006, 1 A for the Model 2. Guessing here risks damaging the electronics. More on this in Chapter 3.
Case 3: It says “6008 professional,” but which one?
Five bodies spanning seventeen years were sold under the 6008 name. The lettering alone is rarely enough here. The order:

The most reliable individual feature is the viewfinder display. Up to and including the 6008 integral and 6008 E, the camera uses red LED digits. The 6008 integral 2 and 6008 AF have an LCD panel that additionally displays the frame counter, metering characteristics, and format orientation. Once you have looked through both, you will not confuse them again.
The trick that always works: read the serial number
From 1982 onward, Rollei encoded the serial numbers. Nine digits, containing the year of manufacture down to the exact week. The system is simple once you have seen it.
Using the number as an example 004 230 028:
- Digit 1 plus 5 gives the last digit of the year of manufacture. Here, 0 + 5 = 5, meaning a year ending in 5. You have to infer the decade from the model; for a 6008 professional, only 1985 to 1992 are possible.
- Digits 2 and 3 are the index, meaning the factory firmware version. Here, 04.
- Digits 4 and 5 minus 20 give the calendar week. Here, 23 minus 20 = week 3.
- Digits 6 to 9 are the sequential number for that week. Here, the number is 28.

The index is more than a footnote. Whether a 6008 integral accepts the rotating 4560 magazine depends on the firmware version, which was upgraded in the workshop on some cameras without changing the serial number. If you are specifically interested in shooting 4.5×6 in portrait orientation, ask the seller whether the magazine has already been used with that particular camera.
Distinguishing the first generation from the second
If the lettering is unreadable or the metal plate is missing, look at two controls:
Where is the film-speed dial located? On the SLX, 6002, 6006, and 6006 Model 2, you set ISO/ASA on the body using a knurled dial next to the waist-level finder. Starting with the 6008, the setting was moved to the magazine, and the body no longer has such a dial. This reliably distinguishes the two generations, even when nothing else is legible.

The second feature is the motor grip. It was included with the 6008 professional and 6008 integral, while on the 6003 and 6001 it was an accessory, and it is not available at all on the SLX, 6002, and 6006. A body with an attached grip is therefore never a first-generation camera.

And the Hy6?
The Hy6, introduced in 2007, is often mentioned in the same breath as the 6000 series, but it is a separate product line: developed by Franke & Heidecke together with Sinar and Leaf, and designed for both film and digital backs. It accepts PQ and PQS lenses, as well as its own AFD lenses without aperture rings; conversely, those lenses do not fit any 6000-series camera because the aperture cannot be set on the camera body there. So if you’re looking for a 6000-series camera, you can set the Hy6 aside mentally. If you’re planning to use digital backs, you should know about it.
2. What the models can do — the comparison
All bodies share the same basic principle: 6×6 on 120 or 220 roll film, a leaf shutter in the lens, driven by a linear motor and electronically controlled from 30 seconds to 1/500 or 1/1000. The aperture and shutter are not cocked mechanically but driven into position. Film advance is motorized; there is no crank. And without power, nothing moves.
The main differences concern three things: what the camera meters, which automatic modes it offers, and how quickly it advances the film.
The view you have while taking a photo: the focusing screen in the waist-level finder, laterally reversed. This is exactly where the later models display their metering values, as red LED digits up to the 6008 integral and as an LCD panel from the integral 2 onward.

What the table doesn’t say
A few points that are easy to overlook when reading:
The 6001 is not a stripped-down 6008; it is a different camera. It completely lacks a light meter. There is no shutter-priority automation, aperture-priority automation, program mode, or spot metering; the viewfinder only shows the battery and flash-ready indicators. It was intended as a studio camera, where a handheld light meter and flash system would be used anyway. If you want to photograph outdoors, it is the wrong choice, no matter how cheaply it is offered.
Fewer models have Multi-Spot than you might think. The metering mode, in which you take up to five individual readings and the camera averages them, is available on the 6008 professional, 6008 professional SRC 1000, 6008 integral, 6008 E, 6008 integral 2, and 6008 AF. Neither version of the 6003 has it, even though they otherwise offer the same automatic modes.
The 6008 professional could shoot at 1/1000 from the beginning. This is the most persistent misconception surrounding the series. The name “SRC 1000” on the successor model suggests that the faster shutter speed was not introduced until 1993, but the 6008 professional was actually designed for it as early as 1988. The corresponding PQS lenses were not completed until 1990, however, so the speed was never engraved on the shutter-speed dial. Behind the “500” are three unmarked detents. This is documented on the lens page of rolleiflex6000.rolleigraphy.eu.
The camera and lens limit each other. What is ultimately possible is always determined by the weaker link. A PQ lens on a 6006 cannot provide aperture-priority automation because the camera does not support it. An older HFT lens on a 6008 integral cannot provide it either because the lens lacks the aperture simulator. And on a 6001, nothing is metered at all, regardless of what is mounted on the front. If you have an automatic mode in mind, you need to check both sides.

What it feels like in practice
Volker Muth wrote an in-depth review on 35mmc. He photographs with a 6008 professional from 1988/89 and also owns a Hasselblad, but he is keeping the Rollei.
His reasons: The waist-level finder maintains eye contact when taking portraits because there is no housing in front of your face. The action grip turns the heavy box into a camera that can be used handheld. And he calls the Planar 2/110 the holy grail of medium-format lens design. He does not gloss over the drawbacks: without power, the camera is dead, and the second-hand market is significantly smaller than Hasselblad’s.
3. Power supply: the series’ biggest problem
An SL 66 is a mechanical camera with a light meter. A 6000-series camera is a computer with a lens mount. The shutter, aperture, film transport, mirror—everything runs on motors, and everything depends on the battery. Without power, you have a beautifully made paperweight.
And this is exactly where the problem with buying used lies: the battery is a Rollei system battery, a block that slides into the body from the left and whose outer face is flush with the side of the body. It originally contains Sanyo NiCd cells. The last of these were installed more than twenty years ago. Virtually every original battery offered today is either dead or on its way there.

The fuse: small, inconspicuous, expensive when wrong
There is a glass fuse in the battery housing that protects the camera electronics. It is visible, and a spare fuse is hidden between the cells next to it; you can pull it out using a plastic tab. The catch: not every model uses the same fuse.

The marking on the battery is not a guarantee. The camera shown above is marked “T 1,25 A slow acting”; it is an SLX, for which the table specifies 0.8 A medium time-lag fuses. Batteries move between bodies over the years, and the marking describes the battery, not your camera. Therefore, always go by the camera model, never by what is printed on the battery.
The difference is not academic. A fuse that is too weak will blow during normal operation. One that is too strong will blow too late in the event of a fault, taking the electronics, transport motor, or the linear motors in the lens with it—these are the repairs that make the camera uneconomical to repair.
Your options when the battery gives up
First: Have the cells replaced. This is the classic approach and the best one for many people. You send in an intact original battery housing and receive it back with new cells, typically NiMH rather than NiCd nowadays, because they have no memory effect and provide more capacity. Three addresses that have been doing this for years and are listed as verified on the reference page:
- Paepke-Fototechnik, Rather Broich 57, 40472 Düsseldorf. Formerly an authorized Rollei service provider, it repairs Rollei products dating from 1960 onward, converts system batteries from NiCd to NiMH, and sells suitable chargers. The owner is now Leonid Kopilevich.
- Wiese Fototechnik, Spaldingstraße 210, 20097 Hamburg. Also a former Rollei authorized service provider, it converts system batteries to lithium cells and offers the corresponding chargers.
- Ni Cd Services, 4 Queens Park Rd, Bournemouth BH8 9BP, United Kingdom, telephone +44 1202 395404. Rebuilds Rolleiflex 6000-series batteries. No website; contact by phone.
The important thing is that you need an undamaged battery housing. The cells fit tightly; if the new ones are even slightly too large, the housing will bulge and no longer fit into the camera.
Second: buy a ready-made replacement pack. If you do not have a housing to send in, you can take the opposite approach. Rolleiflex USA sells refurbished packs for the 6000 series with NiMH cells, currently for 225 US dollars. Accessory dealers offer cheaper options: akkuline.de offers cell replacement with NiCd industrial cells and also stocks ready-made packs, while Akkushop offers a 9.6-volt cell block with 700 mAh for self-installation at around 60 euros, matching the original specifications.
Third: look for used parts. System batteries and chargers regularly appear on eBay and classified-ad sites, often bundled with a camera. The catch is the same as with the cameras: A battery that has been sitting for twenty years is very likely dead. “Untested” usually means exactly that in practice. Such offers can still be useful as a source of a housing that you can then have rebuilt. You pay for the shell, not the cells.
Fourth: run it from a wall outlet. Rollei built a Power Interface (order number 30 017) that fits into the battery compartment instead of the battery and connects to an external power supply — 12 to 18 V DC, at least 200 mA. For studio work, this is often the most hassle-free solution because it eliminates the battery issue entirely. The interface regularly turns up on the used market.
Fifth: an adapter with modern cells. Instead of rebuilding the original housing, you replace it with an insert that accepts standard rechargeable batteries. This is the route we took ourselves. So feel free to read the next section critically.
Don’t simply solder lithium cells into the original housing. Volker Muth explicitly warns in his review on 35mmc against unauthorized lithium-polymer cells in the Rollei system battery; in the worst case, the main circuit board could be damaged. The reason is the voltage profile: The battery is designed for a NiCd charge curve, while lithium cells behave differently during charging and discharging. A conversion to lithium should therefore be handled by a workshop that knows what it is doing — Wiese Fototechnik offers exactly that — or use a solution whose electronics take this into account. A soldering iron and three cells from a hobby parts box are not one of them.
What you can do wrong when charging
Over the years, Rollei built the G, N, C, and D chargers. The point that surprises most people: The G, N, and C units are designed for NiCd, not NiMH. Only the Charger D, released in 2019, was made for NiMH. According to Paepke, if you have your battery converted to NiMH and continue charging it with the old Charger N, it reaches about 95 percent charge, and the unit switches off after one hour instead of when fully charged. It works, but it isn’t what the label says.
With the old Charger G, there’s no point in discussing it; it is considered completely obsolete.
Our own approach — and where it ends
For several years now, we’ve been building a replacement for the system battery: an insert that holds three commercially available 14500 Li-Ion cells with USB-C ports, backed by a high-current circuit board that cleanly handles the current spikes when the motors start up. All three fuse ratings are included so you can install the appropriate one. We created it because we couldn’t find a practical solution ourselves.

The honest limitation: We haven’t personally tested the current adapter with the 6008 AF, 6008 integral 2, and 6001 RCC. These models check battery voltage differently, and there have historically been detection problems with Li-Ion cells. It’s possible the new circuit board solves this, but we can’t claim that it does. If you have one of these three bodies, write to us beforehand so we can discuss it before you spend any money.
And one more point that applies regardless of the brand: Charge cells with their own USB-C port via USB-C, never in the Rollei charger. The charger was designed for NiCd and has no idea what a lithium cell needs.

4. Lenses: HFT, PQ, PQS, and what works together
All 6000-series cameras use the same Rollei bayonet with a ten-pin contact strip that carries aperture and shutter-speed data. Mechanically, almost everything fits almost everything else. What works is another question, and that depends on the lens generation.

The lenses were manufactured by Carl Zeiss in Oberkochen and Schneider-Kreuznach in Bad Kreuznach, as well as by Rollei itself in Braunschweig under license from Zeiss. Zeiss designs manufactured by Rollei bear the lens name—Planar, Distagon, Sonnar—but not the Zeiss lettering. Almost all have HFT coating, recognizable by the reddish reflection in the front element.

PQS lenses do not belong on the SLX, 6002, or 6006. The linear motors in PQS lenses are the second generation and draw more power than the early bodies can supply. This is not a matter of convenience, but of design specifications. If someone tries to sell you a PQS lens “compatible with the 6006,” the information is incorrect. Conversely, everything is fine: PQ and older HFT lenses work flawlessly on the later bodies, just with less automation.
Filters and lens hoods: Bay VI
The standard lenses of the 6000 series have the Bay VI mount at the front. It's the same mount as on the SL 66, and that's why compatible accessories are so often unavailable: Bay VI parts are not compatible with the Bay I, Bay II, and Bay III mounts of the twin-lens Rolleiflex models. Anyone coming from a TLR can't bring their filter set along.

In practical terms, Bay VI means either finding original Rollei filters or using an adapter for a standard screw thread. 67 mm and 72 mm are the obvious sizes because everything is available for them.
5. Magazines, backs, and inserts
The 6000-series film-changing system has three parts, and the terms are constantly mixed up. Here's a brief overview:
- The insert is the holder that contains the roll film and empty spool. It has two diagonally arranged transport gears and can be flipped over, so the full spool becomes the take-up spool for the next roll without having to transfer it.
- The back stays on the camera. It has no dark slide, so you can only remove it once the roll has been fully exposed.
- The magazine has a built-in leaf-type dark slide and can be changed mid-roll. This lets you switch from color to black and white without sacrificing the roll you've started.
One feature that distinguishes the Rollei from Hasselblad and similar cameras: The film plane is located inside the camera body, not in the magazine. The magazines only have pressure plates. This also explains why the Film Stage, the removable film stage, is a separate component in the later bodies.

The compatibility question, answered briefly
This is where the most money is lost when buying used. A magazine that doesn't fit is a paperweight.

6006 magazine on a 6008—possible, but with a catch. With the 6006 magazine, film speed is set on the body; with the 6000 magazine, it is set on the magazine. If you mount a 6006 magazine on a 6008, suddenly neither side has an ISO dial, and the system falls back to ISO 100. You can compensate using exposure compensation, but it is hardly convenient. Magazines for the 6006 are labeled as such; later ones bear the imprint “Magazin 6000”. Take a look before you bid.
The 4560 magazine, introduced in October 1996, is the special one in the system: 4.5×6 cm, and you can rotate it in its frame to switch between landscape and portrait orientation. Check the listing description carefully: there was an older 4.5×6 back without this rotation function. Only parts actually marked “4560” support it.

What is typically missing when buying used
Cameras from estates and liquidations rarely come complete. These parts are almost always missing because they are removed for photography and then misplaced:
- Body cap and rear lens cap. Without them, the bayonet is left open, which is not a good idea on a camera with a contact strip.
- Magazine cover. Protects the film-stage side of the removed magazine.
- The latch on the magazine or waist-level finder. A small plastic part that tends to break after forty years. If the magazine door no longer closes securely, this is usually the reason.
- Focusing screen cover when the waist-level finder is removed.

Without the magazine, the film stage is exposed. A rear cover should be fitted during storage.

Focusing screens are, incidentally, the one case where you do not need to send anything away: they can be replaced yourself in all SLX and 6000-series bodies, and they are interchangeable among the Rolleiflex TLRs from the GX onward, the SL 66, and the entire 6000-series family. If you are looking for a brighter screen, specialists such as Maxwell Precision Optics (Decatur, USA) or Rick Oleson’s BrightScreen offer them. Current contact details are listed on the service page of rolleiflex6000.rolleigraphy.eu; it notes when an entry was last checked, which is more useful for small one-person businesses than a link that eventually leads nowhere.
6. Buying used: checklist, prices, repair shops
There are no new 6000-series cameras anymore; the factory is closed. That leaves the used market, which is fairly limited for this series—both an advantage and a disadvantage: little choice, but also little room for inflated prices.
Check on the camera
- Does it even work? It sounds banal, but that is the key question. Without a charged battery, you cannot assess anything at all. A seller who writes “untested, no battery available” is selling you a gamble, not a device. Price it accordingly.
- Run through all shutter speeds. From 30 seconds to the shortest speed, trigger each one individually and listen. The leaf shutter is in the lens and is electronically actuated; uneven sounds or sticking blades are expensive to repair.
- Test the aperture. Press the depth-of-field preview button and run through all the values. The aperture has its own motor too.
- Film transport without film. Single-frame and continuous shooting. A motor that stalls or clicks is a warning sign.
- Check the fuse. Remove the battery, inspect the fuse, and compare it with the table in Chapter 3. Also check whether the spare fuse is still stored between the cells.
- Contacts in the bayonet mount. The ten-pin strip transmits all data to the lens. Verdigris or bent contacts mean that automatic functions may cut out sporadically.
- Dark slide and latches. The slatted dark slide must move fully, and the latches on the magazine and viewfinder hood must engage securely.
- Focusing screen and mirror. The mirror is partially transparent so the metering cells behind it receive light. Scratches or coating residue are more problematic here than in a normal SLR.
The points where plastic gives way after forty years: latches, flaps, closures. They cost little, yet still determine whether the camera remains light-tight.
The 6008 AF is the special case. In 2002, it was the first 6×6 camera with autofocus and was technically remarkable. However, electronic circuit boards are no longer available for it today, so an electronic failure is generally the end of the road. The spare-parts situation is considerably better for the 6008 integral. If repairability matters to you, the AF is not the sensible choice, tempting though the autofocus may sound.
What it approximately costs
Snapshot from August 20, 2026, observed on Kleinanzeigen.de. The market is thin, and individual listings can quickly shift the picture; treat the figures as an indication, not a price list.

The pattern is remarkable: A 6008 professional with a working battery can be cheaper than a 6006 with a lens, even though the 6008 is technically the far more capable camera. If you are flexible about the model, you can regularly get the better deal here. In any case, factor the cost of rebuilding or replacing the battery into the purchase price; for a device that has been sitting for twenty years, that is the rule rather than the exception.

Who still repairs the series
This is the unpleasant part. Rollei is history, and there were never many technicians willing to take on 6000-series cameras. The shortage of spare parts has reduced that number even further. What remains:

Before trying anything, download the manual. For the 6000 series, the situation is pleasantly good:

- Butkus / Orphan Cameras — Rollei section, the large archive of camera manuals. Funded by donations; anyone downloading something there should leave a few euros.
7. Digitizing 6×6
In the end, the exposed roll of film is sitting there, and the images need to get onto your computer. For 6×6, there are three ways to do it, and none is the clear winner.
Flatbed scanner with a transparency unit. Affordable, slow, and not nearly as bad for medium format as is often claimed—the large negative area makes up for mediocre resolution. Perfectly adequate for contact sheets and web resolution.
Professional service providers. Many labs scan the film while developing it. For occasional rolls, this is often the most sensible solution, since the effort of buying your own equipment only pays off after a certain volume. Where you can have film developed is listed in our film lab directory.
Photographing film with a digital camera. Fast and high-resolution, but it requires parallel alignment of the sensor and negative, an even light source, and a holder that keeps 6×6 flat. If you already own a digital camera and macro lens, this offers the best results for the money.

In brief
If you take only three things away from this article:
- Identify the model by the lettering and serial number, not by feel. The differences between the 6006 and 6006 Model 2, or between the 6008 integral and integral 2, affect the fuse, film back, and lenses.
- The battery is the real purchase decision. A body without power cannot be assessed, and practically every original NiCd battery is at the end of its life. Plan for the solution before you buy — cell replacement, mains operation, or an adapter.
- Check the camera and lens together. PQS does not belong on SLX, 6002, or 6006. And a 6001 does not meter ambient light, no matter what is mounted on the front.
