What is a CR-P2 battery?
The CR-P2 is a 6-volt lithium photo battery based on lithium manganese dioxide (Li-MnO2). It is built as a sealed block, internally consisting of two 3-volt lithium cells connected in series, and measures about 35 × 19.5 × 36 mm with a weight of approximately 37 g. The CR-P2 was introduced in the 1980s as a power source for the then-new generation of compact autofocus and zoom cameras and technically belongs to the same lithium photo battery family as the 2CR5 (also 6 V, different design) and CR-V3 (3 V).
Which cameras need a CR-P2 battery?
The CR-P2 mainly powers autofocus and zoom compact cameras from the late 80s and 90s. Typical models include the Nikon F-601 / N6006 and F-601M / N6000, Nikon AF3 (One Touch), the Nikon Zoom-Touch series 400/500/600/800, Olympus AF-1 (Infinity) and AF-1 Super, Olympus AZ-300 Superzoom, Pentax Zoom 60 / 70 / 90, Minolta Weathermatic Dual 35, as well as the Fuji Discovery series (DL-200, DL-300, DL-400). The complete searchable list with 34 models can be found at the top of this page.
Can I still buy CR-P2, or is it banned like the PX mercury cells?
The CR-P2 contains no mercury and is not affected by the EU bans on the old PX button cells. It continues to be produced as a regular standard photo battery by Varta, Duracell, Panasonic, Energizer, GP, and Kodak and is easily available in electronics stores, drugstores, and online — often under the names CR-P2, CRP2, 223, 223A, DL223A, EL223AP or 5024LC. At Ausgeknipst, it is available as a CR-P2 Lithium 6 V photo block. A typical CR-P2 lasts for several hundred shots in compact cameras, and due to the low self-discharge of lithium cells, its shelf life is extremely long at around 10 years.
Is there a rechargeable replacement or an adapter for the CR-P2?
There is no widely available drop-in battery for the CR-P2. Although some specialized photo retailers offer lithium-ion adapters in the CR-P2 format, this remains a niche market. In practice, a fresh CR-P2 brand battery is the most economical and technically simple solution: one cell often lasts for several rolls of film and an entire year of vacation photography. There is currently no reliable, widely available rechargeable replacement in the CR-P2 format — a fresh brand battery remains the easiest and safest choice.
