The consequences are twofold: light leaks through the gaps onto the film and causes bright streaks or spots on your shots. At the same time, the sticky residue works its way into the mechanism, onto the mirror, the shutter curtain and the film guide.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vast majority of cameras available on the used market are sold with deteriorated light seals. Unless the seller explicitly mentions it, you can assume that the seals need to be replaced.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003ePractical tips\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBefore you start:\u003c\/strong\u003e Isopropanol permanently damages the focusing screen. Also make sure that no isopropanol and no seal material gets into the small opening for the frame counter reset on the camera back (usually at the top right). Never touch the wafer-thin shutter curtain with tools or your fingers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eOpen the camera back and note the position of all the old seals. On most 35mm SLRs (Canon AE-1, Olympus OM-1, Pentax ME), you can remove the back without tools by pulling the hinge pin. You also use the tweezers to grip the protective film of the narrow strips and peel it off.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eNarrow, deep grooves (especially on the back door): after peeling off the protective film, briefly dip the strip in water with a drop of liquid soap. You can then align it and press it all the way to the bottom of the groove with the back of the tweezers without it twisting. More on this under “Frequently asked questions”.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eTurn the camera over, remove the old mirror stop damper and replace it (as with the seals, but without isopropanol on the focusing screen). A Post-It cut to size and placed over the mirror and focusing screen catches the crumbs.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePeel off the shutter curtain protector by the tab, then put the back cover back on.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eClean the outside of the camera body with a slightly damp microfiber cloth and a drop of dish soap, and do not let any water get into the gaps in the body.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eCheck with a few test shots in bright light.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is normal for the back cover to be a little harder to close at first with new seals. Universal strips are more robust, can be laid flexibly around every bend of the back door and, depending on the variant, are enough for 1–2 or 2–3 cameras. The straight strips fit into the narrow groove just as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e“I'm not handy, can I do this myself?”\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYes. The replacement takes patience, but no special manual skill. Two solutions: first, always peel off the backing in stages of just 2–3 cm, not all at once. Second, the soapy water trick: peel off the backing and briefly dip the strip in water with a drop of liquid soap. The adhesive then won't grab for one to two minutes, you can position the strip without stress, and once the water has dried, it holds as usual. We tested the trick with soapy water and with isopropanol, and soapy water works better.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e“I can't get the strip into the very narrow grooves”\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn narrow, deep grooves like those on the Canon F-1, the adhesive tends to grab the side walls before the strip reaches the bottom, and it tears when you push it further. A customer with exactly this camera gave us the idea: briefly dip the strip in soapy water (see above), calmly push it down to the bottom of the groove and let it dry. Alternative without adhesive: simply leave the backing on completely and press the strip into the groove without adhesive. The friction in the narrow groove holds the foam reliably in place.
